How are these indexes intended to be used? Are there searches that can be performed through them?

For instance, with Barth there is <KD III.1> if I search that or link it to the "cited by" tool I see a bunch of places where that section is referenced. I can also search using the same. I am wondering if there are more uses for those types of indices? Just curious...
