Concordance guide

One change made in Logos 8 was the splitting of the Guides into the individual sections. This makes it easier to open the single section/guide that you need for a particular task. It allows one to string as many sections/guides together for other tasks. The only requirement is that they share a reference type: Bible (scripture) reference, (general) topic, word, Sermon Theme (Preaching Theme), Theological topic, or Counseling Topic. For our purposes, the Concordance Guide which uses a scripture reference is what is of interest.

The tab has the familiar drag and drop properties as well as:

• Tab icon
• Tab title, pipe character, current Bible reference
• Close tab icon
• Tab menu with the standard functions. Note that keyboard shortcuts are shown on the right.
  • Open in a floating window / dock this tab
  • Open all in a floating window / dock all tabs
  • Duplicate (tab)
  • Close this tab
  • Close other tabs
  • Close all tabs
  • Reopen closed tab

On the tool bar, there are options for:

• Entering the Bible reference
• Adding Guide sections
• Opening the Panel Menu

When entering a bible reference one may use either the Logos standard Bible reference or a pericope name … pericopes drawn from your preferred Bible. One must select from the list rather than simply hitting enter after entering a value. Otherwise, you are trusting that the entry that is first in the list is what you want.

 

There are nearly 50 guide sections that use a Bible reference as input. Several of these may be invoked multiple times with different parameters. Verbum and Logos differ slightly in what is available.

The Panel Menu shows standard options, again with keyboard shortcuts shown on the right. Options that are specific to Guides are:

• Refresh guide
• Edit this guide
• Delete this guide

Note that although they are inactive in this screen shot (indicated by being grayed out), the standard Windows Ctrl-Z to undo and Ctrl+Y to redo do work in Verbum.  From the forums, it is clear that this is not commonly known.

 

The Guide Section Header Bar contains:

• An expand/contract triangle
• Guide title
• Current option value
• Standard Guide Header Bar menu which includes:
  • Expand/Collapse
  • Move up (in multi-section guide)
  • Move down (in multi-section guide)
  • Collapse all
  • Expand all
  • Settings – opens the Settings Menu when on exists
  • Refresh
  • Add note – this opens a note input box at the bottom of the guide
  • Copy
  • Delete
  • Help question mark – mouse-over and click access Verbum Help
  • Settings – a drop down selection list
  • Panel Menu

 

Settings for the Concordance Guide is a simple choice of label to display.

In the results, interactive elements are either highlighted or in blue type. Here we  see a preview on mouse-over; the resource is opened on click; right click opens a Context Menu.

Below are examples of each of the current labels. Note that the new additions have active attributes while older labels may be inert. I will be pushing suggestions to bring the old labels up to the new standards. I will also research and make proposals regarding user-defined labels.
