Title says it all. Looking for a resource on corporate/collectivist thought, especially corporate/collectibe guilt, in the Bible
Anyone? Bueller?
I didn't find what i think you are looking for in my library, but I found some great quotes in John MacArthur's book "Vanishing Conscience" about Guilt and the Conscience, and our desire to avoid Guilt.
"Twenty years ago psychiatrist Karl Menninger wrote a landmark book titled Whatever Became of Sin? Menninger, who is no evangelical, nevertheless saw clearly the folly of treating social and behavioral problems as if their causes were all utterly non-moral. He pointed out that modern psychology’s approach—making guilt an aberration and treating self-blame as a fallacy—in effect absolves people from any moral responsibility for their behavior. That, Menninger said, eats at the fabric of the soul and society. He added that we desperately need to recover the conviction that certain behavior is sinful."
"No matter what problem you suffer from—whether you are a cannibalizing serial murderer or just someone struggling with emotional distress—you can easily find someone who will explain to you why your failing is not your fault, and teach you how to silence a troubled conscience.
But from a practical perspective alone, that approach clearly is not working. More people than ever feel they are in need of professional counseling. Many are even becoming addicted to such therapy. Unable to cope with their own feelings, they become dependent on a therapist who must continually stoke their sense of self-worth with counsel like, “Don’t be so hard on yourself”; “You mustn’t blame yourself”; “You need to pamper your inner child”; “Stop punishing yourself”; “Let go of your guilt”; “You’re not such a bad person”; and so on."
Please discount this, if I’ve misunderstood your request, Ben.
(Not 110% sure what it is that you’re looking for…)
Somehow your words concerning corporate/collectivist guilt intuitively bring into my mind the concept of “original sin.” Should some search/book regarding it answer your questions?
If I understand even vaguely what you are looking for, the story regarding Achan stealing secretly devoted things in Joshua 7 and the subsequent defeat upon Israel at Ai – and all the commentaries pertinent to that pericope should help?
Or the famine caused by the bloodguilt of the previous king, Saul, during the reign of David, 2 Samuel 21 and the – and all the commentaries pertinent to that pericope?
Or Ezekiel's critical stand on corporate guilt (in Ezekiel 18)?
Or the Church as the body of Christ (though not a guilt issue, per se)?
Not in Logos, but this: Corporate Personality in Ancient Israel by H. Wheeler Robinson?
Please tell me if I’m totally lost in the dark here..?
I don't recall to what extent corporate thought was explicitly addressed, but Anderson's book popped in my head. It addresses sin and guilt from perspectives that are historical but widely ignored (or doctrinally dismissed) in church history. May be some overlap with your present interest, but even if not, it's worth a read.
