Aside: Context Menu – Greek noun

Yes, we are getting close to the end of repetitive data description after which we will get serious about building useful searches. But we also need to build your user-mindset. In the example below, a simple New Testament noun used literally generates 46 Context Menu entries …. which looks overwhelming. It can easily become manageable through the following steps:

  1. Open your preferred Bible with a reverse interlinear to Mark 1:6
  2. Select the word “locusts” and right click to open the context menu.
  3. As the entries depend upon your library and datasets, compare your results to the chart below. Gray out any entries that aren’t in your results.
  4. Gray out any items you know you don’t use – for myself this includes
  • Strong’s
  • all the upper-level events – I care only about the lowest level event
  • preaching themes – they are too diffuse for me, so I used the Catholic Topical Index themes instead
  • labels: accents, syllables, cantillation – these support study techniques I don’t use
  • Longacre’s genres – I’ve not found how this is useful to me, so I set it aside to study when more time is available
  1. While your list should be different than mine, I have just cut my list of data in half.
  2. I then divide the remaining list into three categories:
  • Tagging I understand forwards and backwards – Biblical person, Biblical place, Biblical thing, Biblical event, speaker, addressee, sentence type
  • Tagging that I always look at after my first cut – discourse analysis, propositional outline, intertext
  • The remainder is what I depend on the context menu for on my first cut through the text.
  1. In the items I am going to depend on the context menu for, I choose one value that I’m unsure of and look up its definition. Just one – I may look up others as the need arises. Just one takes little time but when it becomes a habit, you will be surprised at how quickly all those intimidating Verbum terms become familiar and as they become familiar, tools become more useful.
  2. As your library expands and Verbum evolved, you may never reach the point where you never find a term you don’t know, so don’t set an end goal. Just keep on learning one at a time.
