Utilize external hard drive

Hey Guys,

My logos downloads have reached over 40gb so having them stored on my laptop is problematic. I'd love if the developers could work to make the external hard drive accessible and supported by the program. I understand that it can cause issues but it would be great if resolving this issues would be a priority. It would be so helpful!

Thankful for Library having Device facet that shows what is downloaded (This device) and what is not on this device. Selecting resource(s) allows "Downloaded" to be clicked so can click "Remove from device" to reduce storage usage plus change section for search results from "Library (Downloaded)" to "Library (Cloud)"

FYI: for faster performance of refreshing collection cache with many commentary rule definitions, removed some commentary resources from my demonstration account. Already had program settings for Download New Resources set to No, which allows purchase of Free Books to increase "Library (Cloud)"

Older Logos (prior to 8.4) required all resources to be downloaded so used Logos Wiki => Install in different folder or drive to relocate Resources folder to an external USB on a MacBook Air (MBA), which provided opportunity for USB disassemble disaster when MBA quickly exited car.

At least under Windows 10, Logos runs perfectly fine on an external SSD (must be formatted NTFS).

To perhaps clarify, the entirety of the Logos program must be installed on the external drive. Apart from fairly technical and brittle system configuration, you can't store just the resources on a drive different than where the Logos application is installed. (This is in case that's what the OP was asking for.)

On a slightly different note, I find that Logos works MUCH better on an SSD. When I got a laptop with a TB SSD, Logos really soars. You might put it on your wish list.

I just moved to an M.2 NVMe SSD. Random reads 4x my previous SSD, random writes 7x.

Well, I personally run it as such, and it seems a number of other users, too. But according to the wiki, it is possible to install e.g. just the resources on the external SSD and keep part of the install in its original location. I think I've read that some users did this, so it is possible (maybe Dave, and/or KS4J?). Since there's quite a bit of OS-level work involved, I'd personally replace the "must" in your clarification with a "should". I never tried that option myself - instructions for Windows see https://wiki.logos.com/Install_in_different_folder_or_drive#Move_to_a_different_drive and further down below for Mac.

Clarification is Windows Installer having custom option that allows program and database files to be placed in specified drive\folder (internal or external storage). Windows also has option to relocate Resources folder in an existing installation (personally recommend removing downloaded resources to reduce space usage over relocation).

On macOS, the downloaded disk image (dmg) opens so Application Bundle can be dragged & dropped into desired folder (recommend location being on internal SSD).

On an older MacBook Air, successfully had Logos application bundle and Application Support on internal SSD, with only my Resources folder relocated to an external fast USB (external SSD was a bit too expensive several years ago). Thankful for symbolic link working fine for all beta release updates, with macOS details shared in Logos Wiki Install in different folder or drive =>

Relocate your folder with Resources, Indexes, ...

On a 27" iMac, am currently using a symbolic link variant to relocate entire Application Support folders. Thankful for a friend helping me a year ago to buy a refurbished 2019 iMac 27" 5K having 3.6 GHz Intel Core i9 with 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, & Radeon Pro 580x => https://www.apple.com/shop/product/GMVTMLL/A/Refurbished-27-inch-iMac-37GHz-6-core-Intel-Core-i5-with-Retina-5K-display along with subsequent upgrade to 64 GB RAM with faster memory (CAS timing 15-17-17-37 instead of 19-19-19-43) that improved benchmark CPU scores by 5 % (no effect on time to rebuild Logos indexes due to application throttling). Used an external macOS 10.15 USB to boot up refurbished iMac to partition 1 TB SSD into three 333 GB partitions:

macOS 10.14 Mojave (macintosh HD)
macOS 10.15 Catalina (upgraded to macOS Big Sur 11.1)
macStuff

Relocated Logos4 and Verbum folders (in my user's Application Support) to macStuff partition so one installation of Logos4 (now upgraded to Logos 9.2) and Verbum (8.17 demonstration) is "shared" by my macOS 10.14 (has some older 32-bit Mac applications that cannot be used in macOS 10.15 Catalina or newer) and macOS Big Sur 11.1 bootable partitions. Having an administrator macOS account own macStuff partition prevents my Logos/Verbum user account from accidentally changing macStuff partition (so symbolic link is stable for destination volume name). Thankful for macOS symbolic links have worked fine for me (no issues in Logos & Verbum).

I think OP would be happier with a larger (faster) hard drive - ideally an M.2. But even an SSD makes a huge difference at this point.

Thankful for the ability to have certain items on my laptop, and certain items not, as KS4J pointed out.
