Setup:

  1. Open NRSV to Mark 1:6
  2. Select locust
  3. Open Context Menu
  4. Go through the tab side, identifying the definition of the value and the resources one is directed to for the definition and/or additional information on the topic.

We will work through the data at a rate of four at a time to leave time to reconsider priorities (like my Spanish-English dictionary) and truly understand the types of information that the Context Menu directs you to for each datatype.

Selection

When “Selection” is chosen on the tab side:

  • The selection has no special glossary for a technical meaning with Verbum.
  • Lookup provides three dictionaries for definition

Look up which directs one to appropriation dictionaries, lexicons, glossaries, etc. offers three references. Note that a preview is available on mouse-over, the resource opens on click.

  • Merriam-Webster, Inc. Merriam-Webster’s Spanish-English Dictionary. Springfield, MA: Merriam-Webster, 1998.
  • Barry, John D., David Bomar, Derek R. Brown, Rachel Klippenstein, Douglas Mangum, Carrie Sinclair Wolcott, Lazarus Wentz, Elliot Ritzema, and Wendy Widder, eds. “Locust.” The Lexham Bible Dictionary. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2016.
  • Elwell, Walter A., and Barry J. Beitzel. “Cankerworm.” Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Book House, 1988.

The priorities set in the user’s library or the system defaults control which resources are shown.

On mouse-over:

On click:

Reference

When “Reference” is chosen on the tab side:

  • The selection is a Bible reference which is assumed to be understood by users of Verbum.
  • Lookup provides five options for examples of the Bible reference, i.e., occurrences of the {Milestone <BibleNRSV = Mark 1:6>

Look up which directs one to appropriation Bibles, Bible commentary, Bible Notes, … etc. offers five references. Note that a preview is available on mouse-over, the resource opens on click.

  • The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version. Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 1989.
  • New American Bible. Revised Edition. Washington, DC: The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2011.
  • Wansbrough, Henry, ed. The New Jerusalem Bible. New York; London; Toronto; Sydney; Auckland: Doubleday, 1990.
  • The New Jerusalem Bible. New York; London; Toronto; Sydney; Auckland: Doubleday, 1990.
  • The Revised English Bible. Cambridge; New York; Melbourne; Madrid; Cape Town; Singapore; São Paulo; Delhi; Dubai; Tokyo: Cambridge University Press, 1996.

The priorities set in the user’s library or the system defaults control which resources are shown.

Manuscript

When “Manuscript” is chosen on the tab side:

  • The selection is the manuscript (surface) form of the selected text.
  • Lookup provides a single resource for a definition/meaning.

Look up directs one to The Lexham Analytical Lexicon to the Greek New Testament. Logos Bible Software, 2011 which contains:

Lemma

When “Lemma” is chosen on the tab side:

  • The selection is the lemma form (dictionary headword form) of the selected text.
  • A Factbook entry for the lemma is supplied.
  • Lookup provides up to five resources for a definition/meaning.

Factbook is currently in a state of flux. The contents for a lemma entry at this time is:

The section that contains the information of most immediate concern is the Key Article section:

Look up directs one to:

  • Wharton, Edward Ross. Etyma Graeca: An Etymological Lexicon of Classical Greek. London: Percival and Co., 1890.
  • Brannan, Rick, ed. Lexham Research Lexicon of the Greek New Testament. Lexham Research Lexicons. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2020. Note: this is the resource from which the Key Article was chosen.
  • Brannan, Rick, ed. Lexham Research Lexicon of the Septuagint. Lexham Research Lexicons. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2020.
  • Louw, Johannes P., and Eugene Albert Nida. Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament: Based on Semantic Domains. New York: United Bible Societies, 1996.
  • The Lexham Analytical Lexicon to the Greek New Testament. Logos Bible Software, 2011. Note: this is the only resource referenced for “Manuscript”.
