Data in Cited By

Type a passage in the Search box, or link the tool to a Bible from the Panel menu to display where that passage is cited in other Library resources.

Reference Types

The Cited By tool searches for Data Type References that do not link to a specific resource. For example, [Aug., Conf. 13.19.25] will work, but page 252 of a specific book or commentary will not.

Using the Cited By tool

References can be entered in the eference box at the top of the tool, or the tool can be added to a link set so it follows other linked resources. Clicking the magnifying glass icon next to the Reference box will open a Basic Search to the entered passage.

Users can view results in their custom collections by clicking Add.  Collections can be removed by clicking the x to the right of the Collection title or by right-clicking and selecting Remove. Collections can be expanded or collapsed by clicking the Collection title, or via the Context menu by right-clicking a title and selecting Collapse/Expand or Collapse/Expand all.

Drag the results to rearrange, or click Move up/down in the ontext menu. For Collections that have many results, a more >> link appears at the bottom of the list. This link expands the section to include 20 more results, and will reappear at the bottom until all results are visible. Additionally, at the end of each section for the listed Collection, a Search appears. Click this to open a Basic Search to just that Collection.

Open the Panel menu  to access the following Cited By commands:

•     Expanded view or Compact view: These options change the way collections are displayed. Expanded view shows a preview of the relevant section of the resource, where Compact only displays the resource name with a link to open it.

•     Sort results by search rank or Sort results by book: These options sort results in order of relevance or alphabetically by book name.

Using the Cited By tool from a resource

1.   Right-click a reference to open the Context menu.

2.   Click the passage in the right-hand pane (it will display the Reference label when hovered over).

3.   Click Cited By in the left pane; users may need to scroll down in the left pane to find the tool.

Note: Not all resources will be able to access the Cited By tool.

Examples of resources that work

•     Bibles

•     Early Church Fathers

•     Babylonian Talmud

•     The Works of Flavius Josephus

•     Institutes of the Christian Religion

Examples of resources that will not work

•     Commentaries

•     Dictionaries or Encyclopedias[1]

The user chooses resources to be scanned for citations through the Add menu:
  • Collections
  • Series
  • Mytags
  • Ratings

The resource panel allows one to set to a link set, follow, or none (enter reference).

  1. Add permits one to select the groups of resources to be scanned for citations.
  2. The Search icon initiates a Basic search against all resources. However, the search argument is in datatype format e.g., <BibleNABRE Mark 1:2>
  3. An input box is provided for the reference when the tool is not part of a link set.

My application’s Cited By resources reflect my personal interests:

  • All Open Resources – this allows me to include resources that reflect whatever I happen to be working on
  • Catechism – the Verbum supplied collection
  • Church documents – the Verbum supplied collection
  • Author: Doctors across all ACELO churches – my collection of doctors of the Church or their equivalent in the Eastern Orthodox, Anglican Churches, Armenian Church, Chaldean Catholic Church, Latin Catholic Church, Syro-Malabar Catholic Church
  • Church fathers – the Verbum supplied collection
  • Catholic Topical Index
  • Mytag:liturgy guide – my tagging for liturgical works that appear in the Liturgy Guide section of the Passage Guide
  • The Classics of Western Spirituality – a series
  • All resources – rarely used but useful when my primary options yield sparse results

Note that in Power Lookup, references within the resource were looked up in the resources referenced; we could click on the link to open the resource so Power Look up didn’t expand the resources at our fingertips.  Here, Cited By scans other references for links into the current resource. This means nearly all links add access to additional resources.  How much of our library becomes a click or two away depends on your resource settings in the Cited By tool.

The normal mouse-over preview and click open behavior applies:

In this case, one must open the resource (Catechism) to see that the reference is in a footnote. However, if one opens the panel menu and switch from Compact view to Expanded view, the resource excerpt containing the citation is shown which permits the footnote reference to be seen.

“More” extends the list five entries at a time … or use the Search option to obtain the full list.

Data in Explorer

Explorer follows your Bible to display important information about a passage.

Explorer retrieves a variety of interesting data on the current Bible passage, and can be added to a link set to follow along with Bible reading to provide additional information.

1.   Click Tools > Passage > Explorer

2.   Type a passage or pericope in the Reference box and press Enter, or first choose a pericope and passage from the suggested matches.

3.   Click a People, Places, or Things link to open the Factbook.

4.   Click a Media link to open the items mentioned in step 3 above, or an image from 1000 Bible Images or similar resource, or a map from the Logos Deluxe Map Set.

5.   Click a My Content link to open a previously created document.

6.   Click a Cross Reference link to open the preferred Bible to a related passage.

7.   Click a Commentaries link to open a commentary to the passage.[2]

The Explorer tool has the familiar follow, link set, none option but otherwise has set behavior.

The first four sections are the Biblical entities that form the origins of Factbook – you will sometimes see them referred to as Bible Knowledge data.

Biblical events: Events occurring, Events referenced

On mouse-over, a preview is displayed; on click Factbook is opened to that event.

All Factbook sections were discussed in the information card/Factbook discussion above.

Biblical People

The example in Data in Information card and related Factbook entry covers an example (Isaiah) in detail.

Biblical Places

Biblical Places has the standard Factbook preview and linkage features.

Biblical Things

Biblical Things has the standard Factbook preview and linkage features.

The remaining sections cover media, user created content, cross-references, and commentaries. Each of these sections have their own behavior.

Media

Media selects images and maps from a limited collection of resources, especially 1000 Bible Images. Stuttgart, Germany: German Bible Society, 2009 as here. There is no mouse-over preview; click opens to the image in the appropriate resource.

My Contents

My Contents reports documents with relevant Biblical references. Again there is no preview but a click opens the relevant document in its document-specific tool. Documents include:

  • Bibliography
  • Canvas
  • Clippings
  • Handout (obsolete)
  • Homily (sermon)
  • Morph query
  • Notebook
  • Passage list
  • Prayer list
  • Reading plan
  • Resource collection
  • Sentence diagram
  • Syntax search
  • Visual filter
  • Word find puzzle
  • Word list

Cross-references

Cross-references have a preview from the preferred Bible on mouse-over. Note the reference also appears in the gutter which is helpful amidst a long list of references. Click opens the Bible to the cross-reference.

Commentaries

Commentaries have the usual preview on mouse-over and open on click behavior.

Question 1: Using a Basic search, find all references to the Sermon on the Mount in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
