User defined Link set
From Verbum Help:[quote]
• Link set — Resources that are indexed by the same data type can be linked together, and set to navigate to the same reference at the same time.
• Clear all links — Clears all Link sets in the relevant resources at once.[1]
Link a Bible and Lexicon
Since version 7, users have been able to link a Bible that has embedded lemmas (that is, an interlinear or reverse interlinear Bible) with a lexicon or Bible Word Study panel in the same link set. Then, click a word and the lexicon or Bible Word Study panel will open to that lemma.[2]
Explorer
Explorer follows your Bible to display important information about a passage.
Explorer retrieves a variety of interesting data on the current Bible passage, and can be added to a link set to follow along with Bible reading to provide additional information.[3]
Using the Cited By tool
References can be entered in the reference box at the top of the tool, or the tool can be added to a link set so it follows other linked resources. Clicking the magnifying glass icon next to the Reference box will open a Basic Search to the entered passage.[4]
Link sets are not resources automatically included in a resource panel. They are a way for a user to add resources of their choice. To link resources:
- Verify that the resources share an index (visible in the Information Panel for the resource and accessible via the Panel Menu)
- Open the Panel Menu and set the Link Set to a value of your choice.
- Repeat step for all resources you want in the link set.
- Remember that changing the reference in any resource will change all resources (unlike Multiview resources when only one resource drives the others).
The danger of linked resources is that when resources omit references or use broader references, the resource may get a bit confusing in their positioning. When this happens, simply go to a reference that is common to most of them which should clear up the confusion.
Link sets are basic to the layouts in Verbum. Consider the Quickstart Layouts in the Layout Menu accessed from the application toolbar:
The first layout “Bible and Commentary” links a Bible to a Bible Commentary on a Bible index.
The second layout “Bible Journaling” uses no link sets.
The third layout “Devotional” uses no link sets.
The fourth layout “Greek Word Study” links a Bible, a Greek lexicon, and a Bible Word Study guide together on a Greek Headword index.
The fifth layout “Hebrew Word Study” links a Bible, a Hebrew lexicon, and a Bible Word Study guide together on a Hebrew Headword index.
Note that Syriac and Latin layouts paralleling the Greek and Hebrew Word Studies should be a long-term goal of Faithlife/Verbum.
The sixth layout “Lectionary Reading” uses no link sets.
The seventh layout “Passage Study” links a Bible, a Bible Commentary, and the Explorer tool on a Bible index.
The eighth layout “Proverbs Explorer” links a Bible, a Bible Commentary, and the Proverbs Explorer interactive on a Bible index.
The ninth layout “Psalms Explorer” links a Bible, a Bible Commentary, and the Psalms Explorer interactive on a Bible index.
The tenth layout “Study Bible” links a Bible and a Study Bible on a Bible reference index.
The eleventh layout “Topic Study” links Factbook and a reference work on an unknown index – in this beta I am getting inconsistent results.
Exploring how these layouts behave with your library and prioritizations will provide a strong foundation for using Verbum.
