New Resource Type Proposals
As the number of titles in the Logos catalogue expands we want to make the categorization better so that you can find the exact type of books you’re looking for.
We took steps to address this by adding 23 new resource types.
We’d like to add more. Please add your suggestions in this thread.
Suggestions include:
Ancient Manuscript Commentary: A commentary or notes on an ancient manuscript.
Anthology: In book publishing, an anthology is a collection of literary works chosen by the compiler; it may be a collection of plays, poems, short stories, songs or excerpts by different authors. In genre fiction, the term "anthology" typically categorizes collections of shorter works, such as short stories and short novels, by different authors, each featuring unrelated casts of characters and settings, and usually collected into a single volume for publication. Alternatively, it can also be a collection of selected writings (short stories, poems etc.) by one author. Complete collections of works are often called "complete works" or "opera omnia" (Latin equivalent).
Canonical History:
Edited Volume
Introduction: A general introduction to a person or topic.
Liturgical theology and worship:
Monographic Series:
Proceedings: A book of articles written by different authors who present them at a scientific conference
Reader: A book of collected texts assembled for learning purposes. Basal readers are textbooks used to teach reading and associated skills to schoolchildren. Commonly called "reading books" or "readers" they are usually published as anthologies that combine previously published short stories, excerpts of longer narratives, and original works. A standard basal series comes with individual identical books for students, a Teacher's Edition of the book, and a collection of workbooks, assessments, and activities.

I have my library tagged similar to the classification shown when viewing a base package on the Logos website. I always thought those would be good classifications for types. It would make it easier for others to find what is currently monographs and create collections or searches.
Here is an example... only the top portion:

Good suggestion, John.
Kyle, will there be a type for fiction/novels so we can easily hide them?

Kyle, do introductory/survey books such as the sheffield series (Davies, P. R. Daniel. Sheffield: Sheffield Academic Press, 1998.) go under the Old Testament survey or do I ask for a new category?

Edited Volume
This we desperately need, on the assumption that by it you mean works that would constitute a festschrift if they were actually dedicated to somebody.

Thanks John. I've added the ones I could to my list of working proposals.
FWIW we've had internal discussions about better classification of types of Bibles: e.g. English, Spanish, Greek, Latin, OT only, NT only, Apocrypha only, single book, etc. but we'll need to develop something other than resource type to do it. The type "Bible" is so baked into our system that it would be incredibly difficult to change.Kyle, will there be a type for fiction/novels so we can easily hide them?
I added "Fiction" to our list. This would be very helpful.
Kyle, do introductory/survey books such as the sheffield series (Davies, P. R. Daniel. Sheffield: Sheffield Academic Press, 1998.) go under the Old Testament survey or do I ask for a new category?
Right now we're thinking of this as a new category. I have a whole document called "grey" areas. [:D] Basically it must means more Resource Types.
Edited Volume
This we desperately need, on the assumption that by it you mean works that would constitute a festschrift if they were actually dedicated to somebody.
At this juncture I'm leaning toward thinking of "Edited Volume" as a title that is monographic in nature, i.e. it's about one topic, and it features a collection of new or previously published works about that topic.0 -
Kyle, I like the direction this is going. I think a good goal would be to have minimal resources that are type:monograph.

Glad to hear it. I don't love all our current resource types but they're functional. Ultimately our goal is the same as the one you stated: minimal resources that are type:Monograph.

Right. Ergo works that would be a festschrift if they were actually dedicated to somebody.

And they are by multiple people. So this would not qualify, but this would.

Seem like there should be a Counseling resource type given the Guide.

Like John I like this direction but one thing just occurred to me.

We need a category for studies of the Bible other than commentaries: It would include works such as:
- the series Analecta Biblica
- the series Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement Series
- the series Journal for the Study of the Old Testament Supplement series
- the series Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament series
- the series Library of New Testament series
- the series Paternoster Biblical Monographs
This is my most desired and most used grouping not surrently supported.

At the moment, in a basic search I can select all resources of type:monograph to search in - it is a quick and easy way of searching all of my resources that aren't Bibles or commentaries (and a few other types). We would presumably lose this functionality under this new model - would we need to do more work on making Collections to cater for this type of search?
Speaking for myself, the mishmash in monographs made it rarely used by myself. There are two things I suspect are problematic:
- I don't see a situation where I would not want both Bible Study and Study Guide as currently defined -- if the first were Bible and the second non-Bible, I could see it but as book vs. topical I don't see this.
- Handbooks, I think is problematic because they often are better treated according to their topic (the ones on worship, hymns, counseling ...) I'll see what I think after working with it for a while.

I don't mind those appearing in resource Information, but definitely don't change type:Bible (or any other baked Type such as Lexicon, where one could find a plethora of alternatives). Just reduce the Monograph count (which will attract about as much change threads as Factbook 2!).

I have tagged 522 out of 923 Monographs and 504 non-Monograph types. So I would potentially only be interested in resources with {MyTag None} and examine them by Type, or refine the filter e.g. {MyTag None} -type:(Bible, Bible-Commentary), which shows 401 monographs currently.
It's fair to say that I'm not interested in tagging further monographs, but it will be interesting to see how new types cross over with my tags e.g. mytag:Apologetics includes the new type Handbook, one Sermon type and two Study Bible. Handbook is too generic for me. The Sermon consists of addresses that largely suit an Apologetics audience for me, and one Study Bible has the "basic principles of witnessing"!

I'm not sure if it's a real issue but I just wanted to raise and explore it.
I use this type of search quite often too. I'd need to make a Collection of "Basic Search Books" that would be my entire library minus Bibles, Commentaries, Apparatuses, Atlases, Grammars, and such.

Under the old typing, you would still be missing your systematic theologies and biblical theologies, so searching Type:Monograph has not been ideal for this kind of work for years now.

The more I look through my library discerning mistyped books, the more I want to see Type:Philosophy and Type:Drama (think Shakespeare's plays), not to mention Type:Fiction.
We Verbum folks in particular desperately need a Type:Church Documents. Although not everything in my Library that would fit in that type is Catholic, I have a couple hundred Catholic resources that should be of that type. (Hint: Everything in Verbum's pre-built Church Documents collection that is presently Type:Monograph should be Type:Church Documents.)

I am anxious to see the books that are studies of scripture rather than commentaries moved out of monographs. Then the methodological - hermeneutics, exegesis, criticisms - resources are my next big group.
