Verbum 9 Tip 7: Basic Search

With the exception of exploring the sections of the Everything Search, the tips have concentrated on the Bible search. Here, we turn our attention to the Basic search which primarily reviews features we have already seen.

How to read a basic search

In a Bible search one requests:

• Search <list of search fields>
• in <Bible reference range>
• in <Bible resources>
• for <search argument>

In a Basic search one requests:

• for <search argument>

Three panel menu options

Both the Bible and the Basic searches are subject to the three parameters found on the panel resource menu:

• Match case which forces a match on type case i.e., upper and lower case.
• Match all word forms which expands the search to other forms, usually morphological, of the word. This may be done by tagging (Greek, Hebrew) or by algorithm (English)
• Match equivalent references which will return closely related topics in addition to precise topic matches

The scope of the search i.e. how much text is examined to find the terms is not shown.

Comparison of a basic search of atlases for Jordan:

A search for the text term Jordan yields 683 articles in 29 resources:

A search for the datatype <Place Jordan> narrows the results to 72 articles in 8 resources. This tells me that most atlases are not fully tagged.

A search for the term “Jordan” in the description of images and the like finds 35 articles in 6 resources.

A search for the term “Jordan” among names of regions returns 1 result in 1 resource.

While selecting the search field from the drop down list applies it to the entire search argument, you may also use the term-colon-value format to apply the search field to a single element of the search argument.

This illustrates how not only the search argument determines results but also the tagging present on each resource.

Everybody following this should remember those! Note that the setting of the three parameters is not on display anywhere else - which means that the visible parts of a search, such as search fields, search range, resources and search arguments may be 100% identical, but due to these parameters, the results may be totally different. This definitely needs to be taken into account when watching training videos or looking at search results users share on the forums or elsewhere.

This is even more relevant once you use the Inline Search functionality of resource tabs (MJ will surely one day document that). Spoiler: Inline Search works exactly like the search panel documented here, just restricted to the resource for which you invoked it. This includes the three hidden parameters, which are not only not displayed, but can't be seen or changed in a resource tab at all - they show only in the panel menu of search tabs.

Of course, it would be an easy and logical UI change to use white space in the search panel's field line (and the Inline Search line, too) to show three buttons for those three parameters. Some users ask FL regularly since about ten years about doing so, e.g. here: https://feedback.faithlife.com/boards/logos-desktop-app/posts/make-all-search-parameters-and-argument-visible-at-once ....

I guess that these three parameters won't ever change their position. (Possibly they are internally referred to as "Marvin's parameters" and will be kept just like they are in order to remain a hidden reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.) Until they do, it's necessary to keep those parameters in mind.
