Word Biblical Commentary (WBC) March Matchup

What are your thoughts on the current sale of this commentary? I’ve looked at past posts and have seen comments that it has even gone lower than the $599.99 sale price. At face value it seems like a steal at 50% off given it’s great reputation as a resource. Thanks.

Ah, my first ever Logos purchase, way back, ten years ago! [:)] Personally, I didn’t get it as cheap as it is now on sale…[:(]
John F. Evans, in his Guide to Biblical Commentaries and Reference Works, here:
A Guide to Biblical Commentaries and Reference Works, 10th ed. | Logos Bible Software
lists as many as 5 top commentaries for each book of the Bible.
Regarding WBC, these get mentioned from the Old Testament: Gordon J. Wenham (Genesis), John Hartley (Leviticus), Trent C. Butler (Joshua), Trent Butler (Judges), Frederic Bush (Ruth, Esther), T. R. Hobbs (2 Kings), Raymond Dillard (2 Chronicles), H. G. M. Williamson (Ezra-Nehemiah), David J. A. Clines (Job, 3 vols.), Paul House (Lamentations), John E. Goldingay (Daniel), Douglas Stuart (Hosea-Jonah).
As to the New Testament, these WBC volumes get mentioned: Richard Longenecker (Galatians), Peter T. O’Brien (Colossians), William Mounce (the Pastoral Epistles), William Lane (Hebrews) and Richard J. Bauckham (Jude, 2 Peter).
The format of the WBC -series may be somewhat frustrating: perceptive notes and remarks can be scattered through three parts of the text. But if you go with the WBC, you get a lot of top rated commentaries with many books of the Bible.

As Olli-Pekka Ylisuutari said, you get a lot of quality commentaries in the WBC set for a decent price.I got it cheaper because I got an old Logos 2.0 disk version of it a really long time ago, but the current discounted price is the best I have seen for a really long time. If you have any use for technical commentaries, pick it up.
As for the specific volumes that are quite good, it no longer includes the O'Brien volume because it has been withdrawn from sale due to plagiarism concerns.

I think it used to go for $399, but then the set was passed from Thomas Nelson to Zondervan, and the price went up. I think this is the lowest price I have seen since they fell under Zondervan, so that may be what people were thinking when they said it had gone lower. I could be wrong though; it's happened once or twice before. [8-|]

A few years ago there was a sale at $9.99 per volume. That type of sale is always my favourite because you can pick off the volumes you really want at a great price.

WBC does have a lot of technical discussion in each entry.. But for me, a non technical person, the most valuable part of these commentaries is the "explanation" section of each entry. I have found the explanation section to be very readable and useful for my understanding of the text.

I've also read about some of the frustrations with the commentary in regards to its formatting. Isn't it tagged appropriately in Logos anyway? If I were to open the Commentaries Guide to a specific verse, wouldn't it direct me to the right places within the WBC? Maybe there's some extra scrolling action that needs to take place to see everything. I do enjoy studying the Scripture from a technical standpoint so I may pull the trigger.

While some have gotten it cheaper in the past, I believe that happened some time ago. $599 is a GREAT price for what you get with the WBC. Absolutely one of the best values in commentary sets. Its a great resource at a very good price. I say get it now.

Since taking it over, Zondervan has typically done a flash sale on it on all software platforms (Logos included) at least once a year (they did it twice in 2019). However, it usually only lasts a day or two, and they didn’t wind up doing it in 2020, so you take your chances passing it up at $599.
