Types and Tags - Can you give some examples?

I have never been one to tag my resources. I usually would just do a basic search, see what comes up, and go from there. With all the new types being added to the library I am thinking maybe I should start tagging some of them. But I'm not sure what is the best way to do it.

Could some of you provide an example of how you tag your library resources and maybe give a brief explanation why you chose to do it that way?

I realize there is no right way or wrong way. It is all just a matter of personal choice but it will give me some ideas and a better understanding of tagging my own.

I'd assume, as Types become more rigorous/defined, they become more usable for grouping books ... with a reduced need to Tag.

Alternatively, Tags (along with re-Title-ing) remain as both a personal way to organize (as in a physical library), and also to quickly pull up book-groups.

For example, tagging 'Jewish-OT-Pseudepigrapha' would first pull jewish tagged books, then Old Testament connected, and lastly PGs .... as you type the tag name in the library filter box.

Plus re-title-ing arranges the sort (eg by Bible order, etc), both in the library, and in search results, etc.

If you search the forum, you'll find many strategies.

I really try to tag monographs to make them more accessible in searches and in my custom guides. Here is a list of tags based on how FL displays resources in their base packages. I used it as a good starting point.

FL is realizing the importance of being able to manage our libraries and access resources in an organized manner. They are adding types that can be used in place of or in addition to tags. It is a positive direction.

For me tagging has several benefits:

It is easy to put a tagged group into a custom guide. My Passage Guide will also look for Background resources, exegesis and hermeneutics, apologetics etc.
I open my library sorted by mytag so it is organized the way I want it.
I can search resources by a tagged group easily.
The Citedby tool can include tagged groups.
Monographs are now accessible.
The time it takes to tag makes you more aware of the resources in your library.

With FL now creating more types, you may want to wait and see how this works into your plan as it may save some time. However, I do not think their system will really be as complete and tailored as the one I developed for myself. You can use sort by types and use this to create tags more quickly.

The 'standard' Types of Bible, Bible Commentary, Bible Notes, Lexicon indicate content but not necessarily usage. They can be Prioritized for usage, but I classify commentaries by Rating them so they can be organized into a couple of collections, and then prioritize the top commentaries in each collection (for Passage Guide). Many bible commentaries don't deserve that Type, so I tag them as Notes. I also tag commentaries for specific studies e.g. Creation, Eschatology, Kingdom.

I tag Bibles as being Interlinear/Reverse Interlinear and providing Cross-References for Searching.

I don't tag Lexicons because it is easy to prioritize them by Title i.e. by language/Testament, and by Theological and Analytical sub-categories.

Encyclopedias (mostly 'Bible Dictionaries') need to be Prioritized for use in Topic Guide, but I do tag some of them for specific studies e.g. Apologetics, Counseling, Kingdom.

Then I tag the other Types according to content and/or specific studies, especially Monographs (over 500). That leaves over 800 without tags (incl. 400 Monographs), because they haven't entered my range of interest or their Type is sufficient. The new Types won't alter my tagging, but could reduce the need for tagging.

Once you have established your categories for tagging and performed the initial mammoth task of assessing/tagging your resources, you only need to assess new books when they are downloaded. And revise your tagging from time-to-time!

I have often shared this in the forums but it is always a work in progress so here is my latest version. Attached is the system I use to tag all of my books. There are two primary values in my opinion of tagging all the resources in my library:

I have the benefit of excellent tagging when searching
I become more familiar with my library as it forces me to think about how I will tag each one

I should add that I also take the time to rate each resource while I am tagging them as it is another way to prioritize my tags when searching.
