Milestone or no milestones
Because the span of a Bible search is a verse while the span of a Basic search on Bible is a chapter, a basic search is often chosen to search Bibles. However, the Bible search has one filter/parameter not always available in the Basic search – the specification of the passages to be searched.
This is actually only partially true. If one selects only Bible resources to search, the Passage option will appear in a basic search.
Limited to the book of Jonah:
Using Falls, Thomas B. with Justin Martyr. The First Apology, The Second Apology, Dialogue with Trypho, Exhortation to the Greeks, Discourse to the Greeks, The Monarchy or The Rule of God. Vol. 6. The Fathers of the Church. Washington, DC: The Catholic University of America Press, 1948 as our example, we see the same option for passages exists in a resource that has milestone markers for its text:
One can capture the reference by selecting Copy reference search: <JustinMartyr = Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho 1>. The reference in bold is what is needed in the basic search. Note one can remove the section number 1 can be omitted to include the entire work, or provide a reference e.g. 1-10 to specify a specific section of the work. If your reference does not show in the Save line, your reference is not being recognized.
The upper search is limited to the Dialogue with Trypho while the lower search covers the entire resource.
One can see the same screening in action using the temporary collection rule author:Justin Martyr. The passage filter finds only six resources while all passages finds 12 resources meeting the search criteria:
This resource (Edgar, William, and K. Scott Oliphint, eds. Christian Apologetics Past and Present: A Primary Source Reader, to 1500. Vol. 1. Wheaton, IL: Crossway, 2009.) is included in the “all passages” search. However, not only does it not include Justin Martyr’s Dialogue with Trypho, the work it does include does not have milestone references.
In fact, if you change the search to only include this resource, the option to specify passages disappears.
