Verbum 9 Tip 8: Other Search functions

The range of available search methods is illustrated by this high-level chart. Note that this is a work in progress and may change as I learn more – I have learned three new ways to start a search in the last month. We have covered in some detail the items in bold, i.e.:

  • Bible browser
  • Panel menu: find
  • Context menu
  • Search panel: Basic (including Everything search)
  • Search panel: Bible

P15-1 Searching For Data In Verbum 9

We will do some quick reviews, add detail, and cover Panel menu, Selection menu and Command box searches in this section.

Bible browser (review)

To open the Bible Browser,

  • type “Show Bible Browser” into the Command Box or
  • navigate Tools à Reference à Bible Browser

It will default to its own floating window. Therefore, the available options of [in new tab | in new window] is unnecessary.

Faithlife has indicated that the new labels will be added to the Bible Browser as a group rather than as each label is completed. I would expect a notice in the beta release notes to be the first indication of the update.

Be aware of these points when using the Bible bowser:

  • The Bible Browser has its own data source on an internet server. It cannot run without an internet connect.
  • Bibles must explicitly be added to the Bible Browser data. Having a reverse interlinear is a prerequisite but is not sufficient to be in the source data.
  • Only the Bibles listed in the selection list (far left on the panel tool bar) are available for the tool.
  • If one selects multiple attributes or attribute values in the Bible Browser, your results may not be what you expect. Each selection is completely independent so the matches may apply to separate labels.
  • The “search terms” built from your facet selection are joined together by the logical “AND” operator.

User options in the Bible Browser include:

  1. Bible version – pick from list
  2. Bible reference – current location
  3. Visual filters to apply to Bible
  4. Factbook visual filter parameters to apply to Bible
  5. Choice of Verse or Pericope as unit of selection and display
  6. Prior/next and history list navigation options
  7. Standard panel menu options

When one types a value into the Find box on the left, potential matching facets are displayed. A breadcrumb trail of your choices appears on the right. One may delete facets or clear all facets (“start”) from the trail.

Not all the data on the Context Menu is available in the Bible Browser just as not all Bible data available in the Search is available in the Context Menu.

Values for the Bible browser attributes

To determine the meaning of an attribute value:

  • Mouse over the facet attribute value provides a pop-up preview showing the value.
  • Clicking on the facet attribute value adds it to the selection criteria – observe in bread crumb trail
  • Drag and drop the facet attribute value opens the resource containing the appropriate glossary to the value OR opens Factbook to the appropriate entry.
