I live in Ridgewood, NY (in the borough of Queens NYC). Happily married to a master cabinet maker who works for Metro North Railroad also fills in as their chaplain and is an ordained minister but not pastoring. We attend W. Sayville Reformed Bible Church which is about a 47 mile trip each way on the Lord's Day. I am currently doing my post-grad work at Trinity Theological Seminary in Philosophy of Christian Theology and Apologetics.
Two of my professors highly recommended Logos and then it was gifted to me last Christmas. I'm so thankful for those who have put this software together and the experts who respond to questions and problems.

I live in Sudden Valley (Bellingham) Washington, USA: or rather, at my desk here at Logos headquarters!
I am in the sales department and have had the opportunity to speak with many, if not most, of you that have posted on this forum. My good friend Ghebreab (Tes) pointed out that there isn't much Logos Employee involvement in the forums. Well, that's true ... this is my first post. In our defense, they keep us pretty busy with non-forum related business the majority of the time!
Thank you Ghebreab for pushing me into posting, and I look forward to hearing from you all soon!

Hello Nancy,
Saw your post. Glad to have you here. 47 miles is a long way to go for church on the east coast like that. What do you think about the commute? I have some experience with long commutes to church myself. I actually enjoyed the long commute. It allowed me time to "prepare" for service and/or really think about what was said and how it can impact me.

Beneyam, welcome to the forum. In April we have visited Ethiopia with a group of pastors from England, Hungary and Czech Republic. I have been really blessed as we ministered and fellowshipped with many wonderful people of your country. Let God bless you and keep you as you minister to Him in your great nation.

Likewise, Beneyam, welcome! I know Tes through this forum. Beyond that, I used to teach and live at a residential school (kind of like a boarding school) for at-risk children. Most of them were Ethiopian or Eritrean. I learned a few words here and there, and also got to taste doro wat and injara, and other Ethiopian foods. Mmmmm Good! Some of them (boys and girls) were excellent soccer players, too.

I attend Murphy Hill Baptist church in Toney, about 15 miles north of Huntsville, where I am a Sunday School teacher. The conference is great. Moe is gifted at what he does. A lot of basic stuff today, but great for reinforcement, and learned a few tricks too. Perhaps we will get to meet at one of these seminars.

Tes, I celebrated Christmas with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in the Church if the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem, back in about 1972. I later met a young Ethiopian Orthodox nun who told me how the charismatic movement had come into the Ethiopian Orthodox Church through evangelical missionaries who obeyed the rules about not proselytising, so had Bible studies for members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, who remained within their church, but shared what they had been learning with others in their church, so it spread more than it would have if they had become members of an evangelical church. Around 1990 I helped with a coffee morning with English lessons etc for refugee women in England, and we had some women from either Ethiopia or Eritrea. Forgive me for not remembering which: I met them only in the group. I had much closer contact with women and their families from other countries, teaching them English and supporting them in their battles with the British social services bureaucracy.
So it's good to have another contact with someone from Ethiopia through this thread that you started in an inspired moment!

As we are OT except for my passing request for Coptic resources (my smilies don't work), let me share a funny story. I was taking a one week long course on Orthodox spirituality at GTU in Berkeley. Our instructor ran the Orthodox student center for Orthodox students. One of the other students was a Jesuit (Catholic) priest from Ethiopia. Because of the makeup of the class, the syllabus was quickly changed from lecture to question/discussion format so we got to know each other quite well. Or so we thought. It was late in the class on Thursday before we succeeded in making the teacher understand that the Jesuit was Coptic rite Catholic not Orthodox.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Tes, I think there are Orthodox and Orthodox in Ethiopia. I went to the Christmas celebration with friends who have a gift for making friends with all sorts of people from all sorts of traditions. MAybe I would not have been so readily accepted had I not been with them. The nun said there are very traditional groups in the orthodox church, but also others who have been influenced by evangelical missionaries. I also met a lady from somewhere in Europe who had become a nun in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and was very traditional.
Till I met you on the forum I had no contact with evangelicals, tho I have read a book, and we get news past and present that tells us they have had and still are having a rough time. So I do still pray for them, albeit not often enough.
I know this is only loosely Logos related, but it did arise from having become friends thro the Forum!

Hi Tes,
I'm originally from Ethiopia (yet another Ethiopian :-)) and live in Germany (I love Cologne[:D])
I work as a computer programmer.
My Ethiopian Christian site iyesus.com is the first site to offer online Amharic Bible search functionality. I've also developed a standalone Amharic Bible Software called Iota which you can download from iyesus.com for free. Iota of course can not be compared with the huge logos.
Anyways, nice to be here and meet some nice guys!0 -

Tes has really been hoping for an Amharic Bible in Logos, but I know how difficult it is for Logos to get new foreign language Bibles for languages that nobody in-house speaks. I was trying to help Tes find some way to help Logos get the work done to convert the digital files (already available for download in places on the web) into Logos format. They essentially need someone to be a liaison for them to get the publishing rights (if it's not public domain) and proof-check the resource once it's been built, write a blurb in Amharic for the catalogue, stuff like that. Would you be willing to be of assistance?

Hi Rosie,
I'm willing to help as long as the effort does not exceed the sphere of my abilities and available leisure.
In my view, the first step is to analyse the logos format so to decide whether there is any suitable Amharic bible available on the web that can be converted to the Logos format. This analysis could also help to make initial effort estimation for the task. For example if the logos format requires that every word in the Bible for a given language needs to be coded with Strong's numbers, then this could be a make or break criteria. Because, as far as I know, there is no Amharic Bible coded with the Strong's numbers. The task of coding the Amharic words with Strong's numbers may be beyond Logo's capabilities.

While some foreign language Bibles in Logos do indeed have Strong's coding (e.g. the Russian Bible), the most basic ones (e.g., the Finnish Bible -- Raamattu) don't need to have much in the way of special tagging. Just the verse numbers so you can navigate properly to the right verse from the reference box. I presume that since the Amharic characters are part of Unicode, then indexing would work the normal way without any special processing, so Bible search would work. There would be no intelligence about "Match all word forms," though. That's OK. Just getting the Amharic Bible into Logos would be a big help to Amharic speakers.
Can I contact you by leaving a message on the contact page of our iyesus.com website? I know absolutely zero Amharic but I was able to find the contact page by hovering over the tabs, and I can turn off the "write in Amharic" checkboxes.

That is nice that you found the contact page by hovering over the tabs :-). There is also a "contact us" english menu on the left hand side of the page.
Of course you can contact me using the iyesus.com contact form. By the way on iyesus.com you can search the Amharic bible using special search operations like exact word, Anay word, All words, Whole word, substring etc.
