SUGGESTION: Advanced Prioritization Limits within Collections

What
I envision is the ability within a collection to set a book to apply to
said collection only inasmuch as it deals with a prioritized range.
For example, I could create a collection called "Commentaries: Best
Exegetical" and include EBC vol. 2, but set a prioritization limit so
that EBC vol. 2 is only included in the Collection as a reference to
Exodus and gets ignored for Genesis, Leviticus, and Numbers. I could
include the same volume in a second collection called "Commentaries:
Best Expositional" and set a limit so that it is only included in that
Collection as a reference to Genesis and gets ignored for Exodus,
Leviticus, and Numbers.

This capability would allow me to set up a
custom PG which pulls my "best" or "favorite" commentaries for each
book even if that commentary covers more than one book of the Bible
while ignoring that same commentary when it deals with a book that it
isn't stellar on. One more example would be having EBC vol. 8 come up
when I do a PG on Matthew (Carson), but ignoring that same volume when I
do a PG on Mark or Luke.

I'm not sure how feasible it would be to
implement this feature, but I think it could be very valuable. Any
comments from anyone?

Yes, that sounds like it could be very useful. I haven't played with advanced prioritizations much yet, but it's an area I'd like to spend more time with. Partly it's because I don't yet know what commentary volumes would be my favorites for which books of the Bible. That seems to take a lifetime of experience with the commentaries. I only know a couple of them well.

I certainly don't have the first hand experience to do it competently at this point. Personally, I've used the ratings in "Commentaries for Biblical Expositors" as a starting point since the author's theological leanings are close to my own.

I have a collection of my best commentaries. I did it very simple way by rating the best ones with 5 stars, second best with 4. The collection is all 4 and 5 star commentaries. With the ability to have 2 and more commentaries sections in the PG I can see first my best commentaries and only in the next section the rest of those I want to consult.

The problem is exactly as the OP says. For example, I highly appreciate EBC Matthew of D.A.Carson. Well, it is part of The Expositor’s Bible Commentary, Volume 8: Matthew, Mark, Luke. I don't care much for the other 2 included in the volume 8. I gave 5 stars to whole thing since there is no other way. Or is there?

One thing I want to try is limited prioritization of the commentary for one given book of the Bible. It would of course work only for the first 5 commentaries. Or, is it possible to do it some other way?

Personally I think this would get a bit too indepth for my taste and probably wouldn't use the feature. However if I were implementing it I would rather see it setable in the passage guide template rather then the collection. For instance when I added a Commentary section to a template and assigned a collection to it it would then list all of the resources in that collection. Then a range could be set for each one of those resources, with "All Passages" set to the default.

Since not all collections are "commentary" type collections or intended for PG use it would seem to confuse things to put the setting of the range in the Collection pane as opposed to the custom PG/EG pane

That would work for me since it would accomplish the same thing.

I agree as it would allow the same "Commentaries" collection to be treated differently over multiple PG's. However we should be clear that this will not be setting the Priority of a resource, it will simply restrict the output for a particular purpose

PG 1 PG 2

Collection A EBC Vol 2-> Ex EBC Vol 2-> Gen

Others -> Default Others -> Default [Default = All Passages]

Collection B EBC Vol x -> Matt EBC Vol x -> Luke

Others -> Default Others ->
Default

However, there are some omissions:-

Am I saying I never want the output of EBC Vol x for Mark?
- If YES, do nothing
- If NO, add it somewhere

Where do I want the output of EBC Vol 2 for Leviticus and Numbers?
- Add them somewhere; and
- Prioritize them so they appear last in PG

Now for Prioritization:-

NICOT/NICNT series always first
EBC series always second, except for Leviticus and Numbers
BEC series always third

The problem is that we cannot prioritise (have a separate EBC entry for) Leviticus and Numbers below the EBC series, so we would be better off having no output for these books (do not specify them in a PG). We have a chance of prioritising specific books higher than the series but see http://community.logos.com/forums/t/20094.aspx
