Link: Allow User to Dismiss Update Notifications and Skip Updates

We can currently close/dismiss toolbar notifications for resource and dataset downloads. We can also dismiss notifications for updates we've already installed.

I would also like the ability to dismiss all notifications, including software update notifications. There may be a reason why I want to delay installing an update or even skip it altogether and I would like to have control over what notifications I see on the toolbar. If I have decided to delay installing an update, I'd like to be able to dismiss the notification and then install the update when I'm ready. Allow me to dismiss it for that session at least. If I've decided to skip an update, allow me to click "skip update" or something similar so that I don't get any more notifications until the next update cycle.

We can still use the "Update Now" command to force an update, or we can go to Program Settings and install the update from the Internet section, so there's no need to constantly have a notification on the toolbar telling us to update. Updates and the notifications for those updates should be completely in the user’s control.

Logos updates are becoming increasingly disruptive to my workflow and I would like to take a more measured/deliberate approach to updating. Thus, I am taking more control over the update process by turning off automatic updates, but I'd also like to be able to control the update notifications as well.

    Commands:

    Set Update Channel to Manual

Effectively disables software update checking (& subsequent notifications) since Manual update channel does not exist.

    Set Update Channel to Stable

Changes Update Channel plus checks if Stable Channel has an update.

This isn't working. I'm still seeing the notification, even after restart.

In Program Settings, ensure things are under your control by setting Automatically Start Downloads to NO and set Show the Notification Bar to NO.  After you have Set Update Channel to Manual you will still receive notifications for resource and dataset updates, but you can download them when you are ready.

Curious if had a software notification before changing update channel ?

FYI: on a MacBook Air (MBA), months ago set update channel to manual in Logos & Verbum => allowed me choose when to download disk image (dmg) for manual update (have skipped over several releases since MBA use is sporadic).

Yes, I had a notification before I change the channel to manual.

    I'm on a PC.

I had Automatically Start Downloads set to NO already. I subsequently received the blue notification on my toolbar when the update was released. Now that notification will not go away. Then I Set Update Channel to Manual as Keep Smiling suggested. The blue notification on my toolbar is still there. I just set Show the Notification Bar to NO, and although I didn't get the yellow notification bar when I restarted, I'm still seeing the blue notification on my toolbar. smh

Question: would you suggest I have Download New Resources set to YES or NO? Does that impact resource updates or does that only affect newly purchased resources?

I've been having trouble downloading both new purchases and resource updates since I set Automatically Start Downloads to NO. For new purchases, it's like it starts to download one of the resources (if I've purchased multiple ones), and then it realizes it's not supposed to so the resource never downloads. When I try to cancel the automatically started download it doesn't fully cancel it so that I can restart it manually, the blue download button doesn't work. I have to restart the software (sometimes multiple times) to get it to download. For updated resources, it removes the outdated resource from my machine but then doesn't download the updated one. When I try to download it manually I have the same problem as with new resources. The resource shows as if I'm already downloading it, but it never downloads, I have to cancel the download and restart the software several times to get the download to work. I'm wondering how my settings are impacting new purchases and updated resources.

Ideally, I would like to get rid of the blue update notification on the toolbar and also be able to easily download resource/dataset updates and new purchases manually without having to restart the software. What are the correct settings for that scenario?

You cannot 'get rid' of the blue update notification on the toolbar (that is its purpose, by definition). Nor can you avoid having to restart Logos for some resource/dataset updates (ones that are open or being used).

I have Download New Resources = YES together with Automatically Start Downloads = NO. The metadata of new resources will appear in Library, but that does not mean the actual download has started. So don't try to cancel the "automatically started" download as it will not begin until you are ready.

This is the reason for my original suggestion for people to vote on. I would like this to be changed. If I have decided to skip an update I don't want to keep seeing the notification for that update. I don't want to see an update notification for the software until the next update cycle. So in the present case, I would like to dismiss the notification for 9.5 SR-1, and I don't want to see the blue notification for a software update until 9.6 is released. I can close notifications for software updates I've already installed or for resources/datasets that I've already downloaded. I would also like to be able to close notifications for software updates I don't want to download.

. I don't want to see an update notification for the software until the next update cycle.

Is this practical? Some of the updates resolve crashes, are necessary for resources to continue to work, adapt to changes in operating systems and drivers, . . .etc.  When I help people, I like to be able to say you were notified on ... rather than if you turned your notifications on you would have known ...

Every piece of software that I have installed on my computer allows me to dismiss update notifications. Even Windows itself gives me more control and flexibility over my update process and timing than Logos does and doesn't nag me to death by having a constant notification in my face until I update. (Windows Update has come a long way because this wasn't always the case, they've done a lot to make it less obtrusive and disruptive.)

I don't see what's so dangerous about being able to dismiss an update notification in Logos. Even if I don't have a "skip update" option, I would at least like to be able to close/dismiss the update notification for that session and have it not show again until I restart Logos. Again, why is that so dangerous? Dismissing notifications is basic software functionality, it's not some type of revolutionary idea that's never been done before.

It comes down to me wanting more control over my user experience rather than having Logos forcing everything on me.

    Kiyah,

The main reason I can think of is many times new resources need updated data type info or program support to work correctly. this mainly impacts those who buy prepubs. The other reason is that to me it is more disruptive to have to check and see what the update or SR releases fixed, and if I need them, than to just update the software.

Windows isn't constantly releasing new books everyday like Logos does, so its easier for them to not nag you. I have come to appreciate the "every six week" update schedule, but each to his own.

Yep. Apple even allows un-notifying security updates ... far more significant than a Logos book. And on my Biblia mobile app (FL), I blithely don't update and buy and read books. In fact, I don't even update the books. It feels so refreshing. Just read! Study!

FL's in-your-face 'you bought thousands of books', now do what we like" has been operant since the Libronix team retired.

But no problem. My desktop L7 happily never sees eternal updates I never need. And it's well-coded (complement) ... I'm guessing my PC will be the issue.

L7 was the last time I remember being an unreservedly happy Logos user. I miss those days, the days when I used to try to encourage other people to get Logos, when I could use Logos every day without being frustrated with the interface or with the company. It's like it's just one thing after another now.

If MS Windows, yes Windows(!), is better than you at keeping the software up-to-date in a non-disruptive, non-obtrusive, user-controlled manner, you've got self-examination to do considering Windows' infamous history with calamitous and disruptive updates. And MS Office updates are so smooth and seamless these days I don't even notice them until I realize I can do something new I don't remember being able to do before.

I'm just tired of being frustrated with Logos and Faithlife and all I want to do right now is be able to dismiss this annoying and distracting notification from my already overcrowded toolbar.

IIRC, L7 dealt with updates in the same way that L9 does.

I don't mind the every six-week update schedule. It's not the frequency of the updates that is the problem for me. I am usually a person who believes in keeping my software up-to-date and thus usually have automatic updates enabled with most of the software on my computer (including Logos).

But lately, it seems like Faithlife can no longer be trusted to keep my software up-to-date without my supervision, and I would like to have more control over the update process. I'd like the opportunity to wait and see what's in each update and how it's impacting users before I install it, and if I see an issue that I think will negatively impact me, I'd like to be able to decide not to install that update and wait to see if the next version fixes the problem. And I'd like to be able to do all of that while not being nagged within an inch of my sanity to install an update by a distracting notification that not only refuses to be dismissed or ignored, but to add insult to injury, is also taking up precious space on my toolbar and taking priority over the tools and resources I need to actually study the bible.

Yes I know I'm ranting, blame it on Faithlife's Big Brother, Daddy Knows Best approach.

    Yes I know I'm ranting,

Sometimes we need a good rant ...

I might be more inclined to agree with you if I actually noticed and read the notifications...but I only see the notifications when I actually go looking for them.

I wish I could ignore them better. Notifications are very distracting for me in general. I tend to turn unnecessary/non-critical notifications off on all of my devices.

It would seem that having both Download New Resources = NO and Automatically Start Downloads = NO has cleared up the download problems I was having. I am able to download resources manually now with no problem.
