Biblical Things
Prerequisite reading: Parks, Jessica. Biblical Things Dataset Documentation. Bellingham, WA: Faithlife, 2021.
From Verbum Help:[quote]
Biblical Things Section
Lists all of the biblical things that are mentioned in the guide passage or are associated with the key topic. Biblical things include artifacts like "Goliath’s Sword" or classes of items like "Sword" and weights and measures such as "Shekel." This section has no settings.
Things are listed by name. Click the name to open the Factbook to that thing’s page. A reference list where the thing is mentioned appears after the thing’s name. Click a reference to open it in the preferred Bible. If there are more than a few references, click ... at the end of the list to show the complete list of references.
Finally, thumbnails for media items tagged with each thing are listed. Click a thumbnail to open that media item.[1]
Section heading bar
The section heading bar matches that of the previous Biblical entities except for the text in the Help preview and the position to which Verbum Help is opened on click.
Contents
The contents of the Biblical Things guide parallels that of Biblical People and Biblical Things. Initially, a condensed content is shown including only the top three places. At the bottom of the page is a list of additional Biblical places mentioned in the passage and a show all option.

Search
There is no suitable search for the following reasons:
- Only the clause search supports the “ANY” function which allows you to find all instances without knowing the values in advance. However, the clause search only shows items with a direct relationship to the verb
- A Bible search using Louw-Nida numbers fails to find antecedents, implied subjects, etc as it only matches actual lemmas. In addition, Louw-Nida lacks a compact set of numbers for things as it does for the proper nouns of places and people.
- The Bible Browser does not allow for a initial restriction of Biblical text to something smaller than Bible book. Should one be allowed to specify the passage to be considered, Bible browser should produce satisfactory results.
- Globally, anywhere your text deviates from the manuscript uses for the reverse interlinear or chooses a sense of a lemma other than that chosen by FaithLife is a possible source of “errors.”
Supplemental materials
While I personally like to create concept maps for some of the Biblical things, e.g., rod-staff, Verbum has no built in features specifically for Biblical things.
Factbook
The factbook entry for a Biblical Things contains:
- Standard Factbook header
- Media section
- Referred to as
- Events
- Biblical senses
- Sermons
- See also
- Topics
- Search
Note that the Factbook entry is less developed compared to Biblical people and person.
