Inline Search behavior

I find the inline search behavior very counter-intuitive. I feel like I am always bouncing around a bunch of tabs and back arrows when just searching within a single reference. I understand why a full search in the search pane would involve multiple tab results, but inline searches should be simpler to navigate and preferably kept to a single pane unless I choose otherwise.

What I would like to see is something like I perform an inline search and the results appear in a new pane of the same tab next to the original resource, similar to a parallel resource. This should not block/cover the original resource as it does now. Then give me the option via a right click / left click option for opening the result in a new pane of the same tab, or a new tab (the current behavior). This way I can work through the results in a single tab without having to manage multiple tabs and back arrows to get back to where I started. I simply close the extra panes when I am done with the searching.

New tabs get confusing because some things pop open on the right side of the screen (resources) and some on the left (searches) and I have no control over this behavior. This is not a simple experience for users and Logos really needs some simplification! Inline searches should be simple. I know many probably have opposite feelings about this function, so I would suggest the user be able to control which behavior Logos follows rather than a blanket change.

What platform does this request apply to? I'm not seeing additional tabs on the PC desktop.

This is on PC, but I have the Bible open in the left hand side of the screen via a saved layout. If I perform an inline search, the results do appear on the left hand side over the original resource. But if I select any of the results, a new Bible instance opens in a new tab on the right side of the screen. Very annoying!

I'd never thought about it but I never select an item from an inline search - I close the search if I want more context.

Just to clarify, when you do an inline search, the results are not opening in a new panel. What is actually happening is that the actual view of the resource is being filtered down to just show the results with the selected context. This means that everything that worked with the normal resource view (highlight, context menu, etc) all still works with the filtered results.

What are you trying to accomplish by "selecting the results"? What are you expecting to happen? Perhaps we can help you find a better way to accomplish what you are trying to do?

Clicking the label opens up a new resource panel because it can't open up in the current panel without clearing your results, which would be annoying to use in most cases.

Happily, if you click on one result to open it, then click another, it will reuse the same panel rather than open another copy. That means when you are done, you will only need to close the one extra panel.

That makes sense on inline search filtering the results as a view. I like to keep my primary resources (i.e. Bibles) on the left half of the screen and supplementary resources on the right side, which I accomplish via saved layouts. When I perform an inline search and left click on a result to open it in a Bible, I would prefer it split the existing tab in half and open the full reference next to the search results by default (maybe via a program setting) such as how the multiple resources feature works. If I want to open a search result reference in a new pane, I should be able to accomplish that via right click on a search result. This is much like how Internet browsers work. This would allow "chasing rabbits" without resulting in a bunch of things popping up in a left-right-left fashion and making it difficult to get back to where I started (which should happen just by closing the inline search function unless I specifically chose to have a resource open in a new tab via right-click). As it is now I often have to close a bunch of new tabs and hit the back arrow on the original pane to get back to my original place and content.

Some of the confusion definitely comes from the inconsistent behavior. For instance, If I have a single tab open to full width and click a search result, the reference opens in a new tab right next to the original resource. If I have a resource pane opened on the left and another on the right and perform a search on the left resource, clicking on a result opens a new tab in the right pane.

In the first example of a full screen tab, that new search results tab has the inline search active and so I sometimes use it to refine my search as the original is hidden at that point unless I manually select the original. That's why I would prefer the search results and resources I open from that to appear in the same tab divided into two panes. Basically like the image below but as a single tab instead of two. Anything I click on the left side search result would then open in the right "multiple resources pane" unless I right click and select open in new tab. Then when I close the inline search, I am right back where I started and in the correct place rather than having to close multiple windows and hit the back arrow a few times like I do now.

In case you didn't know, you can drag the link instead of clicking it to open the panel exactly where you want, which would allow you to put the copy of the resource in a more convenient and consistent location to match your needs. Do that for the first link, then subsequent clicks will use that same panel until you close it.

That said I hear what you are saying about wanting the full resource side-by-side with the inline search results in a single panel. I recommend adding a suggestion for this to the feedback site to help raise visibility for this idea.

I did not know about dragging. That is definitely helpful, but would still eventually love to see everything contained in a single tab. I've added a request here:

    Thanks!
