How can I limit searches and visual filters to kings of Judah and kings of Israel?

2 Kings 9:14 mentions a Jehoshaphat (who is not King Jehoshaphat) and the king of Aram.

  • NIV 2 Kings 9:14 — So Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram. (Now Joram and all Israel had been defending Ramoth Gilead against Hazael king of Aram,
  1. How would I do a search for passages which only mention Jehoshaphat the king (and not Jehoshaphat the father of Jehu)?
  2. How would I make a visual filter for only the kings of Judah and not other kings?

How would I do a search for passages which only mention Jehoshaphat the king (and not Jehoshaphat the father of Jehu)?

The search string you want is <Person Jehoshaphat (king)> (technically this will also find verses, if any, where both Jehoshaphats are mentioned but I assumed you would want that). To generate such a search:

    • find a verse where this person is mentioned
    • right-click his name
    • select the Person tag on the left of the context menu
    • choose the Bible search on the right

How would I make a visual filter for only the kings of Judah and not other kings?

I can't think of any built-in way of doing that - the tagging is not there to support it

Thank you for your response. I see from your screenshot that I've been doing things the hard way! And it seems that your method has also eliminated at least two verses the refer to Jehoshaphat (father of Jehu), son of Nimshi.

I have been using the Visual Filter to distinguish the kings of Judah from the kings of Israel (and trying to distinguish the good ones and half-bad ones from the rest!).

Judah: Rehoboam OR Abijah OR Abijam OR Athaliah OR Amaziah OR Uzziah OR Azariah OR Jotham OR Ahaz OR Manasseh OR Amon OR Josiah OR Jehoiakim OR Jehoiachin OR Jeconiah OR Zedekiah

Israel: Jeroboam OR Nadab OR Baasha OR Elah OR Zimri OR Omri OR Ahab OR Jehu OR Jeroboam II OR Zechariah OR Shallum OR Menahem OR Pekahiah OR Pekah OR Hoshea

Good kings of Judah: Jehoshaphat OR Asa OR Hezekiah

The problem comes from identical names in both kingdoms: Jehoahaz OR Joash OR Jehoash OR Joahaz OR Jehoram OR Joram OR Ahaziah

Apparently the best way is to highlight them individually or set up a filter with selective references.

Thanks again for your help! I greatly appreciate it!
