How to keep track of reading progress

I usually read book from beginning to end. However, when the book allows it, I will sometime read various chapters/sections out of order. For example, I have read chapters 32-36 in John Piper's new book, "Providence" and occassionally, I will read selected days from "Lives of the Saints" by Butler.
Does anyone have a good method of keeping track of what they've read and what they have not?

I use a reading list ... but then again I'm the reading list over-achiever.

Generate a Chapter Reading Plan where you can click a chapter to read and then "Mark as Read" (right click where check marks would appear in the Plan). This allows you to read at your own pace.
This will not work for "sections", or for some resources, where you need to generate a conventional Plan. This requires more tuning*, but you can still read out of order as above.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm trying my hand at creating a reading list right now.
