Hebrew cantillation

Some basics:

The Hebrew Cantillation charts are available through either the interactive or the clause visualization:

  • Hebrew Cantillations. Bellingham, WA: Faithlife, 2014.
  • Lexham Hebrew Bible: Cantillation Analysis Graphs. Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2016.
  • Brannan, Rick. Lexham Hebrew Bible: Cantillation Analysis Documentation. Bellingham, WA: Faithlife, 2017.

There is only one resource for Hebrew Cantillations that appears in the Visualizations Guide; it is available only for the Hebrew Bible canon.

P22-1 Cantillation Option

The contents of the Lexham Hebrew Bible: Cantillation Analysis Graphs:

  • Cantillation mark name which is consistent with the name used in the Interactive
  • Domain – first part is labeled A, the second part is labeled B
  • Rank (for disjunctive marks) which is indicated by a letter following the cantillation mark name
  • Hebrew text divided into visual words
  • Hebrew text divided into “words”
  • Hebrew lemma
  • Morphology coding
  • English gloss

P22-2 CV Cantillation

Clicking on an element in the chart highlights the related scope; Context Menus are available on a right click.

P22-3 Scope

The same data from the interactive but with the tooltip on the Hebrew text not available for a screen shot.

P22-4 Interactive

Unfortunately, I’ve yet to spend the time required to truly understand the Cantillation marks – partially because I don’t read Hebrew.  However, the resources that I provided above should serve as a solid starting point for you to build the knowledge I lack.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."
