Many of the fixes have been great, but can I just make one complaint about the sermon editor?

When putting in scripture references I don't always want the text to be imported in. With this most recent update I can't even put in a bulleted list of verses without them changing into blocks of text. Is there a way we could add more control to this feature?

I agree - this is very unhelpful

And, also, as far I can see when entering a biblical reference in a block of normal text it does not generate a link (tested this on Mac)

Happy to see some dark mode improvements.  Logos 9 is inching closer to having a useable dark mode, but we're not there yet.  Purple font is still not legible.  Yellow background highlights are still not legible.  The 9.7 beta at one point had some improved yellow highlights, but this has been reverted back to something that isn't legible.  The highlights in the palette still don't match the actual highlights in use.  Hopefully these issues can be addressed in 9.8.  I'm sure there are other combinations that aren't working as intended, but these are the ones that stick out based on my uses.

Is this an issue just with list items?

It currently requires that the Bible reference come at the end of the paragraph. We've got some ideas on how to handle internal references, but we've not built that yet.

I believe so - as the act of pressing Enter is required for going onto the next list item but now that inserts the biblical text - a workaround is inserting a space after the reference before pressing Enter. And it was in investigating this workaround I found the issue of not including a link

Is this (effectively) a regression in 9.7? I don't believe this was the case in earlier versions. If so, I personally think this outweighs the benefit of the new features that support insertion of biblical text in 9.7

The new features in Sermon Builder are much appreciated!

This was an oversight. We're fixing it so Enter doesn't try to insert a Scripture block when you're in a list.

Sorry. I misunderstood what you were saying. I thought you were referring to when Enter would insert a Scripture block, which is now more flexible in 9.7. In prior versions, a Bible reference had to be alone as its own paragraph for Enter to insert the passage as a block. In 9.7 the Bible reference merely needs to be the last thing you type. So the old behavior still works, but now you can insert a Scripture block after something like this: "As Paul says in Romans 8:28." We even support non-terminal punctuation (i.e., commas and colons). So there's no regression here. This is a new feature that makes inserting Scripture blocks much more flexible.

I'm not seeing the regression you're referring to. Bible references are still converting into hyperlinks for me. Are you typing, or pasting? There is a known bug when pasting Bible references in multiple paragraphs that we're working on. I'm not sure if that's a regression or has been around for a while. Is that what you're referring to?

Yes - I appreciate this and it is really helpful. Thanks for introducing that

If I type john 1:1 into a blank line (the same applies in a non-blank line) then I get a linked reference and the option to insert inline or insert as a block

If, however, I just press the space bar those options disappear (which is correct) but so does the hyperlink

This only happens if the name for the biblical book is entered without a capital letter at the beginning - so this might not be a regression at all

Apologies for the lack of detail initially.

Thanks for these details, Graham.  We are already talking about this internally this morning with our development team.  I appreciate the feedback.

Got it. This appears to be a bug on Mac, iPad, and web. On Windows it works correctly.

Thanks Phil - however I see this problem on Windows as well. My screenshots above were from my Windows system.

Hmm. I'm on a later version (I run the alphas).

I did just discover that Windows has a problem, too. The behavior is just different. Here's a GIF:

    That sounds promising

    That is strange!

Further to Morgan and Graham's comments of the bible reference and insert issue...

I too have the same problem as Morgan. I have read through the comments and I'm glad to see there are internal discussions on how to improve this.

I had thought that using a modifier key with ENTER (CTRL, SHIFT, etc) could allow the new paragraph function, however, to me it seems the most intuitive function is for ENTER to behave normally by default, i.e. new paragraph/list item.

Perhaps the program could then be set up so TAB opens a pop-up menu with hot-key options such as "I" for "Inline insert", "B" for "Block insert", "H" for "Hyperlink reference", "P" for "Prompt insert" (to insert the first few words of a verse as a memory aid), and so on. (Maybe CTRL+TAB would be better to allow for users to actually insert a tab within their text, though this may not be a common requirement in sermon builder).

If the options start to expand in number, this could be a cascaded menu, then the "TAB | Hotkey(s) sequence" that the user uses most would become habit.

Also, would it be possible to add a function that forces a new page in the preaching mode, with a symbol to signify the end of each segment? In one service, I often have a children's talk, followed by a main message, followed by a thought for remembering the Lord. Although they are often prepared separately, it would be more practical to combine them into one service so I don't have to exit preaching mode, find the appropriate sermon then re-enter preaching mode each time. Much easier to swipe or tap for the next page. It's not practical to do this in sermon builder because it is impossible to tell where page breaks are as they will vary between devices and preferred layouts.

Final thought (promise) - I find that having sets of commentaries divided up makes for a bloated desktop at times. There are a number of sets I use frequently, and when doing a study from many parts of Scripture, having multiple tabs open for even just 3 or 4 commentary sets just becomes too unwieldy. If all resources in one set could be combined into a single tab, it would be much easier to assign that tab to a "Link Set". Allowing it to link to two sets could greatly maximise the use of resources, keeping the primary reference as the driver for one set and the secondary reference as the driver for searches and cross references linking to favourite resources.

I know that may sound very complicated, but as James said, "Ye have not because ye ask not" - so why not ask?![:)]

I'll be very interested to see if any of this is possible.

On the whole though, enjoying using v9. It has definitely helped in my sermon preparation.

    Thanks

If you do just have one tab for a commentary series then - if it is linked to a Bible - you will always have the "correct" commentary for the passage you are studying.

Exactly. If I remember correctly all the way back to WordSearch, this is how the commentaries were arranged, and as other volumes or books became available they were incorporated into the tab for the set.

By the way, I use another study program alongside Logos (SwordSearcher), mainly for Bible searches and TSK cross referencing (I just find it more intuitive in that program, plus the TSK is an expanded edition with more complete cross-referencing). If some of these features could be made available in Logos, I could have one Bible study window open instead of two.

    Hi David

I don’t quite understand what you are saying and why the “tab for set” functionality is not working for you

I recommend starting a new thread explaining what you are trying to do and we'll try to help

My apologies. I wasn't aware of the "Tab for Set function". I'm still getting used to Logos and misunderstood your previous comment.

I will try a new thread to learn about this.

    Thanks again
