Sentence Diagram Tool non-responsive in places

Logos 9.7.0.0020, macOS Monterey 21A5304g

I'm trying to learn how to diagram sentences. I found a basic text ("Drawing Sentences" by Eugene Moutoux), and I'm using Logos' Sentence Diagram tool to do the practice diagrams.

After a few successful attempts, I can no longer enter text or draw a line. I click on the icon, and it seems to highlight (barely – note to Logos: it would be nice to have a greater contrast between selected and unselected icons here). 

Anyway, in the above screen shot the line tool is selected, but Logos thinks the arrow tool is selected, and a click+drag draws a selection box instead of a line. The same thing goes for the text tool and pencil tool. 

I CAN drag new symbols from the left-hand panel.
