Cross-references

Is it possible to list all the cross-references for a certain book of the Bible? I am looking for the cross-references for the book of Daniel. Any suggestions?

1. open Cross-references guide as a single section guide (Gudis --> Bible reference -- Cross-reference)
2. Enter the passage Daniel
3. Use Save as Passage list to preserve the results.

Awesome thanks MJ.

Hi MJ. While this does give all the cross-references from a book, it doesn't refer to the Scripture in the "source" book. I just did a search on the book of Daniel. It listed all of the cross-references i.e., Genesis *.*, but it didn't link or show which Daniel reference was being used. I would like to see something that would list all of the references in Daniel "linked" or at least referred to in the passage list. Having all of the cross-references without the source isn't too productive...at least in my way of thinking.

You are asking for something that the OP did not. One can insert headings in the Passage List which meets your needs but is a manual process (or multiple files). But inserting headings limits the useful of the sort for making one look up a reference only once. Basically, you have to choose what elements are most useful to you or make a suggestion at Roadmap | Faithlife

Thank you for the prompt MJ. I submitted at suggestion at:

I hope something can be done with relative ease.

Looks like the Cross-Reference guide is kind of buried at the bottom of the list. That's not so convenient, but you can right click on it and pin it to the top. Cross references being an awesome tool that is really where they belong![8-|]

Faithlife has pushed Important Passages as a better replacement for Cross-References. They are closely related and one should consider carefully which actually meets your needs most closely.

Thanks! Yes I agree. Cross references are an important step in my bible study process. I like to look at as many cross references as I can to get a deeper understanding of a passage.

Thanks Bill for your comments. I don't think that the intention is that we would enter a book and get a list all of the references for that book though that is how I used it. I entered Daniel and it told me that there were over 3234 references. This is important information to me. I think the intent is that you would enter the reference for a passage and get the cross references for that passage. Are you interested in the references for Daniel or to use the tool for other studies?

Huh? Guides --> Bible Reference Guides --> Cross-references from alphabetical list ... doesn't seem "buried" to me but one can easily pin it to the favorites under guides OR to the shortcuts bar.

I've created a custom guide that is only the cross references section and saved it in the favorites' bar.

I think what you are looking for is something like New American Standard Bible Cross References might give you. There are others that do somewhat of the same thing... but I find most of them to be short sighted in their references. And I think the Cross Reference Guide to be very short sighted in what it delivers. The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, The Holman Christian Standard Bible: Cross References, The English Standard Version: Cross Reference, , New Topical Textbook - all seems to search by either a word or a short phrase of one or two words. Many times, I find myself searching for a theme or topic of the verse or passage.
There are other books... like New Naves Topical Bible, Dictionary of Bible Themes - seem to be more about themes... allbeit... sometimes their themes and what I think the themes are may differ.
But with all these... generally they provide a starting place for something I'm searching for and sometimes provide the information that I'm searching for.

I will be teaching a class on Daniel in the coming weeks and thought it would be nice to present a list of the cross-references in Daniel connecting it with the rest of the Scriptures. However, with over 3K references, it became a lot more complex. I could go through each verse of Daniel and list each cross-reference, so that I have source and destination, OR, as I am currently thinking, it would just be better to say that there are over 3400 cross-references, but not to tell them where...I say this in frustration...
When I opened the cross-reference Guide, and typed in "Daniel" in the search box, it listed ever one of the cross-referenced passages in Canonical order WITHOUT showing which reference went with which verse in Daniel...therefore, becoming totally useless for what I wanted to do...I would have expected each cross-reference to be tied to its source verse in Daniel.0 -

Hello Bill. I will see what I can come up with and post it here if I am able to do it.

Matt, I appreciate the help, but the Important Passages does basically the same thing that the Cross-reference Guide does, just not in Canonical order.

Bill, this is what I have found. Logos Cross Reference Guide lists 3,234 passages. Actually I believe these are the total number of verses. There are actually 1,524 references (passages). All of the books of the Old Testament have been cross referenced to the book of Daniel with the exception of the book of Daniel itself. I believe this to be an error in the guide. There are obviously cross references to other passages in the the book of Daniel within that book. The book "The Story of Daniel," by Stephen Haskell lists 239 margin references in the back of it. In the New Testament, according to the Cross Reference Guide, the books of Titus, Philemon, 2 John, and 3 John are not listed. Going back to Stephen Haskell's book, he lists marginal references for Titus (2 references) and 3 John (2 references). If we take into consideration Stephen Haskell's book we find that the only books in the entire Bible that are not connected to the book of Daniel are Philemon and 2 John. A closer examination will like find connections in these two books as well.
Considering the results of the guide alone there are 1078 cross references to the Old Testament, 359 cross references to the New Testament and 87 cross references to the Apocrypha.
Looking at both the Cross Reference Guide and Stephen Haskell's research this is what we have book by book.

Michael,
Thank you for this listing. It is another step closer to what I would like to see/do for the class that I will be teaching. Right now, I'm thinking that this information will suffice for this year's class, however, I may also, some time in the future, go through Daniel verse by verse and follow the cross-reference links from Daniel to Rev. (and all of the others) making sure to notice whether or not that the cross-reference is also backward connected to Daniel...it will be a lengthy process, I'm sure.
Thank you again for giving me some insight from another resource.

Appreciate what you've done and this is something that causes me confusion.... Yes... I can do a Cross Reference on the whole book of Daniel.... but what verse or verses in Daniel is the resulting verses linked to? This open endedness is abigious.
Only way left is to go verse by verse.

You got it. What I have done shows that the book of Daniel is connected to the rest of scripture. You are right, to get the full picture we need to go verse by verse. Even with the software bible study is hard work but very rewarding.

I am wondering.... since Cross Reference seemed to already make the connection (which searching the whole book).... say cross referencing the whole book of Daniel... does it go verse by verse through Daniel? If it does... then it would seem to be a simple ordeal... just to print the verse that is cross referenced ...then the verses it found cross referenced too.
Talk about a great tool that would be!!! [8-|]
Say I am studying Daniel chapter 3..... So I fire up Cross Reference.... type in Daniel 3.... and search.... Then I would have a listing in the results... something like this....
Daniel 3:1 -- Gen 11:2, 1Ki 12:28, Jer 16:20, Hos 2:8, Psa 96:5, Isa 41:24, Isa 46:6.... etc and etc.
Daniel 3:2 -- Ezr 8:36, Est 1:1, Dan 2:48, Dan 3:3... etc and etc.
Daniel 3:3 -- Mat 7:13, Rom 1:21, Rom 1:28, Rom 3:11
Something like this would definitely enhance studies as it would save time in the process and make use of what (it seems) the program tool (Cross Reference) has already done.

Thankful, someone else is seeing what I'm trying to get to. If we have to do it verse by verse, then so be it, however, it would be so nice to have this done (even in the background) by selecting the Book or even by the Chapter.

Hi MJ. While this does give all the cross-references from a book, it doesn't refer to the Scripture in the "source" book.
...
Not sure if this what you're looking for, but on the New Testament side, the New Testament Use of the Old Testament interactive lets you filter to selected biblical quotations, allusions, etc. whose source is in Daniel, by selecting Daniel under the "Book (Source)" facet in the sidebar. This shows 110 references from the NT back to Daniel, and you can filter further if desired to the type, who was speaking, etc.
We don't (yet) have a companion interactive for OT use of the OT, but the recent Old Testament Use of Old Testament: A Book-by-Book Guide provides a lot of helpful information:
"Cross reference" can mean a lot of different things, and can also be subjective. That was part of the rationale for developing the Important Passages Guide section (you can open this independently of the rest of Passage Guide), and I'd recommend you look further into this. This Guide section lets you select different types of cross-references under the Types selector. Just for Daniel 3, this lists 563 passages altogether. Any "Shared" type is essentially bidirectional: for example, "Shared Cultural Concepts" shows other passages with the same cultural concepts as Daniel 3 (Miracle, Pagan Worship, Capital Punishment, etc.) that are also closely related to the passage in Daniel (or you can view all such passages from their Factbook pages). You can also select related passages where the target, rather than source, is in Daniel 3, with the "From" selector. More Logos Help information on the Important Passages Guide section is here.

Thank you, Sean. That is getting closer to what I would like to see. However, the number of links don't seem to add up. Using the cross-reference tool, it shows ~ 3400 cross-references from Daniel to the rest of the Bible...not sure why there would be that much of a disparity. I will see what I can utilize for the class that I will be teaching.

When it says 3400 passages, it really means verses. So Matthew 1:1-10 would count as 10 passages in the guide.

Got it - when one saves as a Passage list one actually gets passage count. BTW I get 3845 as the initial count 400 more than you

Are the cross references for Verbum different than Logos, so you are getting 400 deuterocanonical references?

I doubt it. The cross-references dependent upon your library. In the top section (cross-reference resources) I have 4 resources (somehow I thought it was five). The bottom section is based on the Bibles in your library that have cross-references. Mine include at least 75 Bibles.
