Newbie Question:

I know I can and have linked my bible to various commentaries, etc. so that they "follow" the bible text as I read. How do I do this for a large multi-volume commentary? (I bought the Expositor's Bible Commentary which is 12 volumes.) I'd really like to just look stuff up in there as I read, without having to figure out which volume I need to open.

As far as I know this should just work as you want.

I have just setup a link between my Bible and the Word Biblical Commentary set and when my Bible reading crosses over the end of one commentary it automatically replaces it with the other.

Have you tried this with EBC and found that it doesn't work?

This works fine for any commentary set (including EBC) within the same Testament. If you jump to a book in the other testament, however, it doesn't work, even if your commentary series covers both OT and NT. This is a shortcoming that has already been reported and they should (hopefully) be fixing it in a future release. Also if you jump to a passage for which there is no corresponding volume in that commentary set, then you lose the commentary tracking for the moment (as would be expected). Some sets are incomplete, for example Pillar NT Commentary.

The easies way would be to open Bible on a given reference and than go to the command box and write ebc. It offers you the commentary to open and than you link it with the same link as your Bible. It will go whenever you change the reference and the series has the volume. If not, it will stay on the former reference.

Another thing you can do (if you have a saved layout with some commentary included) is that you hit plus icon (see example) and choose EBC from there. Than you link it as in the previous method.

Yes, by all means, when faced with a question like that, try it out, and see if it works. It can't harm anything, and I think that's the best way to learn -- by personal experience. In fact, you'll find, that it will work. But you could have discovered that yourself before getting an answer from here. Set them both to Link Set A, for example, and then when you go to a different book in the NT, the commentary will open to the corresponding volume. And you'll want to save this layout so you don't have to set up the link again in the future.

You don't need to make a collection of the volumes first, but you will need a separate layout for the OT link (for now, until Logos implements serial resource associations which will make the OT connect seamlessly with the NT in any commentary series that has volumes covering both in it).

I just tested this out with NICOT & NICNT, and it switched across testaments. I started with a passage in Isaiah, went to Genesis 3.15 and then to John 3.16. In each case the NIC opened to the correct volume and passage. This also worked for the "Believer's Church Bible Commentary." It even worked with Wiersbe between the OT Be series and the Bible Exposition Commentary and back to "Be Amazed"..

It did not work with the International Theological Commentary.

You will probably still need separate layouts if you open original language resources. Well, you could stack them and use the tabs to select the correct resource.

Thanks, Jack. Your testing was more thorough than mine. I tried it with WBC and it didn't work between testaments so I assumed it was a problem with th engine regardless of which commentary set you're using. I guess it's specific to the commentary. If it's been appropriately tagged or whatever needs to be done to it, then this will work.

OK, duh. It works for me too. I think it was just so slow that I thought nothing was happening and jumped to conclusions. From the time I entered a verse reference (in the other Testament) in my ESV to the time the linked WBC opened to that point was 6 seconds. Way too long!

The issue, as you discovered, is not jumping between OT/NT books in a recognised Series but jumping between NT Bibles and OT/Deuterocanonical Bibles, which was accomplished via a user-defined Serial Resource Association (SRA) in Libronix. The nearest we have in L4 is the Series "The King James Version with Apocrypha" but an SRA defined a link between any bibles e.g. [LGNTI, AFAT, NRSV] would allow me to jump from Matthew in LGNTI to 1 Macc in NRSV or from Luke in LGNTI to Joshua in AFAT (the order of the resources ensured I would not jump to Joshua in NRSV!).

That is probably because I started with one that actually worked. [8-|] If I had started with ITC, I may have assumed that you were correct and left it at that. NIC is my primary commentary set, so I started there.

It works for me - and quickly, too. Are you sure the reference you're jumping to exists in ITC? It's not complete yet.

You would mess up my discovery of an error with truth [:D]. The NT Books I used in my experiment were Matthew and Mark, neither of which exists in the ITC. It is not one of my top commentaries, so I am less familiar with what it contains.
