I love how calendrical issues reflect more than just a community's astronomical understanding of things, but also reflects many of their values. In my Dead Sea Scrolls class with Shemaryahu Talmon, he was always pointing out how those documents were full of references to the calendar and its implied values that often were at odds with Roman, Greek, or majority Jewish society. It makes me want to continue celebrating New Years DayS with all our friends!
