Jonathan Edwards was He?

Was Jonathan Edwards a 17th century or an 18th century theologian? He lived in the 1700's, but the Encyclopedia of the Reformed Faith says that he was an 18th century theologian? How can that be if he died in 1758?

Which is correct to say, that he was a 17th century or an 18th century theologian?

Why do we say “18th century” when it's the 1700s? Because there was no zero year, or zero century, or zero millennium. The 1st century started with the year 1 and ended with the year 100. The 18th century started with the year 1701 and ended with the year 1800.

Then there are some of us who hung laundry on the line to dry. In grade school, it was pounded into our heads why you needed 3 clothes pins to hang two dish towels. Same principle as naming of centuries ... anytime I start to get confused I go back to those towels and clothes pins.

My formal education was spread out over more than one country, and ... when you are the child of addict, you are just thrown into whatever back corner of the school where you will be least seen. The assumption is that you cannot learn, or maybe they didn't even give us enough thought to come to that conclusion. But I read and read and read. During the hardest times, it was sometimes little more that what I could pick out of the trash dumpsters and the food labels on every box and can in the house, and after my parent got saved, the Bible. As a child, the thing that made me cry the most was running out of books. That was my addiction.

My educational gaps and strengths are random. It is hard to fill them in when you don't know what you don't know. Nothing was pounded into my head in grade school. LOL. I have a sibling that almost graduated from high school being unable to list the months of the year. I'm not talking about the correct order, but she was not unable to even list all of them. I was reprimanded by our parent for interfering when I tried to pound THAT into her head. Sigh! I was told that is what a calendar is for. But as we are discussing here, a calendar doesn't self-explain how to use it.

Please don't assume that I forgot about people with backgrounds like yours. My daughter had two addict biological parents, a pedophile legal father, and three failed adoptions. My son has a learning disability that affects sequencing -- at 50 he is unlikely to get days of the week, months, or the alphabet in the correct order. My other son is legally blind, physically limited by cerebral palsy, and spent 12 years being raised by a single parent who was an addict with severe mental illness - one parent committed suicide, the other was murdered. That is why I thought to qualify my statement with "some of us hung laundry " ... I recognized that my experience was not a universal experience but also knew that "two towels = three pins" would help some to see the "why" of the century numbering.

Given that my grade school had three teachers for 8 grades and that at 10 students I was in the largest class to graduate, don't assume my experience is typical. They have grown. They have added a kindergarten and grown by nearly 50% up to 93 students. When my Dad went there it was 1-12 and well under 100 students.
