When I narrow down my library view, what determines the rank? What benefit or purpose does it have?

The rank is the order of resources based on best match to what you typed in the box, which acts as a search field. People have asked for a long time, if someone clicks to order by rank, it should stay that way as a preference. It always goes back to alphabetical.

It isn't a field you can turn on/off like the metadata. It only shows up when you filter your library.
