Ryzen 7 5800H or Intel i7

Which is better to run Logos, the Ryzen chip or the intel? I read that the Ryzen 7 5800H has more single and Multi-Core performance (whatever that means) but whatever it means, is it advantageous for Logos or does it make any difference.

Logos is the heaviest program I use on my laptop and so without going into detail that I won't understand anyway, give me simple suggestions. Thanks.

I bought a desktop with i7 3 months ago, and it works fine. For the indexing, it may use 100% of the processor (all cores) and the indexing is relatively fast. I also have some processor-heavy layouts, and they work fine.

My computer has an integrated video card and it was the bottleneck, so I bought an plug-in card, and now it works far better. If you plan to buy a laptop, you may check that is has an appropriate graphics hardware part.

Thank you for getting back on this. The laptop I've used for the last few years has the i7-4700HQ processor & a dedicated video card which has run Logos perfectly. Unfortunately, the unit has come to the end of its days so I've got to move into something new and am trying to decide whether to remain loyal to the i7 processor or go with the AMD. Either of the two that I'm presently looking at have a dedicated video card, the latter having a graphic memory size of 6 gb. Would you judge that as being an appropriate graphics hardware part?

I was wondering if anyone on here actually uses the AMD processor and if so, does it handle Logos well.

I think 6GB is sufficient. Mine is 16 GB, but I am also doing CAD. Logos may sometimes load slowly on complex layouts, or may not show some panels in the first try, but it may be more on the layout data loading than in the graphics.

I am using the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (8-core) and 16GB memory along with a dedicated video card.

It runs Logos absolutely fine - I haven't done any specific tests or observations to see if there are any bottlenecks at any time.

Thank you Veli & Graham for your replies. It seems Veli that you're into heavy duty stuff which I've never touched in my life. And Graham, that you're using the AMD with the 16 gb video card and Logos is working absolutely fine as you say, that's encouraging. It does seem the AMD processors are not slouches.

I'm late to the conversation, but I built a Ryzen 5 5600X last summer. Logos lives on a DDR and I have 32 GB RAM. All these things support other work that I do and Logos is the happy beneficiary of all of it. So, to answer your initial question, I couldn't be happier with the way Logos runs on my Ryzen.

Thanks for that Lew. Obviously, you could have gone for something heavier duty but that you're finding Logos doesn't lallygag with the Ryzen processor etc, tells me the AMD chips are not shabby by any means. Very good sir! Thanks again for your input.

I decided to buy another computer. When my network card updated and locked things up and I spent 2.5 hours undoing that mess... and my Intel I2 processor is pushed because of other things I do besides Logos... The computer is 10 years old I think.

So... I bought a Laptop with latest Intel max core processor ... laptop with docking station... to have desktop and mobile.... and I'm a hoping it will be faster than what I have now...

Haven't got it yet.... but the reason I bought it is 3 things... 1. I want a computer that will last for the next 8-10 years.(I dream a lot. Ha.) 2. I debated between Ryzen and Intel.... but found the Intel on sale...so it was cheaper than Ryzen...and I do try to save when I can....3. I didn't want to replace my desktop and my laptop I have now.... so bought a laptop and docking station to serve both ways.... I hope.

More than adequate. Very similar to my "Gaming" laptop with a smaller screen. My Intel i5 11400h benchmarks slightly faster than the Ryzen 7 4800h.

The i7 is a generation ahead of, and faster than my i5 and is comparable to the Ryzen 7 6800h. But it should have the same heat characteristics (the "H" suffix) meaning that it gets warm at times!

They all have the same 3060 Graphics card, 1 TB SSD, 16 GB memory but a price differential of about $500. I would go with the Ryzen 5800 as it is a newer and faster CPU than the 4800, but go for the Intel i7 if you can afford it.

Anecdotally, I have run Logos on both Mac and PC platforms now. I believe I had the fastest indexing run ever where it finished in around a minute or two on my Core i9-12900K with a Corsair MP400 SSD.

I'm not saying you need that particular CPU or SSD to run Logos, but what I am saying that if you're used to how Accordance performs, this is the hardware to have.

The ASUS Rog Strix i7-12700 was indexing within a minute. Unfortunately, I had the joy of this machine bluescreening and after a week or so attempting to fix it, it went sailing back to where I purchased it. Right now, I'm hurdling along with a 12 year old Toshiba till I get the nerve to try something new again!

You can see my specs below. I run an r9. It used to take my old laptop between 60-90 seconds to open Logos...maybe more, I know it seemed to take forever. My current rig goes from double-click to fully loaded in 6-8 seconds. I always have about 100 resources open and about a dozen searches and a dozen open books in multiple windows, and all that boots to ready-to-use in just over 5 seconds. I was researching the components just before COVID, and at that time the general consensus was that there was almost no reason to go with Intel. I don't know what the current scuttlebutt is, so it may have changed since. If you go AMD, expect good-great performance.

I think a good AMD rig either Ryzen 5950X or threadripper would perform just fine, especially if you have tons of SSD bandwidth.

The only reason I went Intel is because of DDR5, which on the motherboard I have is apparently somewhat clock limited in high memory configurations, so oh well.

The fact that Bible software must peg the latest modern CPUs for upwards of 2 minutes on good sized libraries is inexcusable. But be that as it may, at least there seems to be a financial solution. If only that solution was better code, be it algorithm or better design altogether.

I had rolled back and forth between the AMD and Intel and finally went with the latter. I was not disappointed with the speed nor with the way Logos worked on that machine. I'm not so keen on buying something though and then having to return it plus going through all the reegamarow of setting it up only to pack it in and send the thing back. Near ten years ago, I went through 3 new machines before I got one that worked right.

I know next to nothing about processors but from what I've read, I'd have no problems going with an AMD.

I would get an m.2 ssd if you can. I have a Lian Li O11D ROG case (worthy of all the praise it gets) w/ 13 fans total--10 Noctua fans plus a 3-fan NZXT AIO. Have 3 out on top and 1 out on back; 3 in on bottom and on the right side I have 6 in using a push-pull config--the Nocs pushing and the AIO pulling. The AIO is a Kraken Z73 w/ a digital temp readout for both CPU & GPU. Temps are usually in the 30s-50s, occasionally in the 60s. Have never seen 70s. Thought about a piped water-cooled rig, but passed and am super happy with my temps.
