Bundles and Pre-pubs

I have noticed that occasionally a “smaller bundle” will be included in a “larger bundle”. i.e. the Zondervan 87 volume bundle and some of the other Zondervon items. Without careful research, it is possible to end up with duplicate purchases.

I would like to see at a minimum, annotations on each item/resource, listing any other bundles/basic packages that resource is a part of.

And since, all of our records are maintained at Logos’ servers, it would really be nice if the listing showed which larger package a resource is a part of, but also whether or not we already own it in another package.

FYI, if you bought the Everyman's Collection that just came out, and you had bought the Charles Ryrie Legacy Collection as well, you paid twice for three resources - three of the resources in Everyman's (Revelation, 1st and 2nd Thessalonians, and Acts of the Apostles) were authored by Ryrie and previously sold in the Ryrie Legacy Collection. You can see this on the product details pages.

It does not appear to be Logos' policy to adjust/deal with this, which IMHO seems a little out of character from their normally exemplary customer service. Maybe it's just too much of a logistical nightmare for them to handle...

Concur; sometimes they sell "expansion packs" to add resources onto base collections, but other times it is as you point out above...duplicates without a price correction. That is why I didn't buy any of the Spurgeon stuff during the march madness...if I later bought the whole collection, I'd be paying twice for the sub-collections. I'm looking forward to the new website design that will (hopefully) flag me when I already own all/some of a set of resources that I'm looking at...and (maybe) give me a price break for already owning parts of the collection.

While I appended my agreement above, one thing that must be realized by us users is the practical end of things.And from a practical perspective (and business perspective, which they are) this question must first be answered in a business smart way:

If they give you a price break on one collection because you own several books from another collection, what's to keep you from selling both collections as complete since there is no physical media?

Also, some issues of bundling may be layered on Logos because of the manufacturer. For example, I REALLY want to buy SESB but already own about 2/3 - 1/2 of the resources that come with SESB. SESB is not Logos's product and they cannot give a break. And should they give a break on the products they sell me that are in SESB if I already owned SESB?

With that being said, I think that more can be done to at least warn us what resources are in other collections and what resources we already own since they do keep track of licenses. That really would help us manage things more properly.

I later bought some whole collections that included books I had already bought during the March Madness sale. My sales rep was able to refund me the purchase price of the items that I'd bought before (even though it was several months prior) and those were returned/relocked, because I'd get the license for them afresh with the new collection.

This works fine as long as the books you buy come stand-alone. Whenever there is overlap between Collection A and Collection B, I think Logos should separate them out into pieces so people can buy the union of A & B without double buying the intersection of A & B:

In addiction to packages A and B, they should either sell a package that contains A U B (A union , or they should sell three packages that contain A - B (in A but not in , A intersect B, and B - A, respectively.

James is right on this. This is precisely the reason they can't give you a price break (or refund) on titles you already own from another bundle when you buy a collection. There is no way for them to individually relock titles from a collection if you own the license for the whole thing. Otherwise they could relock the intersected titles in collection A when they sell you collection B (you'd have access to them via collection B, not via collection A, so if you sold collection A, the person getting it from you would get a crippled version of that collection). All of this would be just too complicated to keep track of, so they don't allow it.

EDIT: However, I concur with the original poster's request that the website should show when a bundle is wholly included in or overlaps with another one that you already own or have ordered in pre-pub. A new overhaul of the website is underway right now, taking into account lots of user suggestions. This one has been brought up before (at least a request that the website should warn us before we attempt to buy something that we already have), so I'm sure it will be addressed.
