Change Link Set Master

Is there any way to change which panel is the master resource in a link set? I keep a number of Bible translations open in a link set (saved as a layout), but the one I read most often is not the master. In order to keep them synchronized as I read, I have to scroll in a panel other than the one I'm reading, which is annoying and creates jerky scrolling as I read.

I'm not sure how I got it set up as it is, but I don't know how to define the master, even if I were to start over. Help?

A link set has no driving resource. Use the multiple resources feature when you want a particular resource to drive the others.

Multiple Resources

The Multiple Resources feature provides additional "guest" resources in the same panel as the main "host" resource. This functions similarly to having multiple resource panes open connected with a link set, with some differences and advantages.

Any number of resources can be added as guests, and guest resources share several of the traits of a host resource automatically. Visual Filters, Inline Interlinears, and Inline Searches will all be applied to applicable guest resources.

Accessing the Multiple Resources feature

The feature is only accessible in resources that contain Bible milestones; in general, this means Bibles, Bible Commentaries, original language fragments, etc. Add the Multiple Resources menu to a Bible by clicking the icon on the resource toolbar. The Multiple Resources option can be enabled and disabled after adding guest resources by clicking again, or by pressing Cmd+Shift+M (Mac) / Ctrl+Shift+M (Windows).

Adding guest resources

Click to open the Multiple Resources drop-down menu. Enter a book’s full title, or short title, and matches will be promoted to the top of the list for easy access. For example, to add the New International Version (2011) as a guest resource, type New International or NIV and that Bible will appear at the top of the list.

To add the desired resource to the panel, click the checkbox next to the resource name. It will go to the upper section of the menu, which will populate with all added resources.

At the very top of the Multiple Resources menu, click the checkbox next to Show multiple resources: to enable and disable the feature while maintaining the list of desired resources. This is the same behavior as using the above keyboard shortcuts for toggling the feature.

Adding to MJ, the Multiple Resources function, on first blush, seems a poor solution to wanting leader links. But having used MR over the years, they're pretty nifty:

- Links jerk you around mindlessly. You touch a participant, and everybody jumps to the top of the link. You lose your place, and there's just no fix.

- MRs let everybody calmly be read; only the leader does any jerking, and almost always welcomed.

- MR participants can be highlighted, right-clicked, and so on, just like normal resources.

- You can have multiple MRs. Bibles, lexicons, dictinaries etc. And they don't chew up the precious A-F links (I use them all!).

I'm a fan of MRs. And CitedBy panels. Both good designs.

It would be useful to have a screen shot of your layout. Is it one of the Home Page layouts? i

Multiple-resources may be impractical due to the width of the panel, and it has no advantage if the other panels have to be kept in sync i.e. you must open the panel menu and select the same linkset as the other bibles.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I tried Multiple Resources and I can see some advantages, but I have a few problems with it:

It seems to show only 5 resources when I'd like a few more than that open side by side (maybe this is what someone mentioned about the width of the panel being a limitation?).
I can't figure out how to maintain it by adding or removing resources. I've somehow gotten some things included that I don't want, and I don't know how to remove them. (That is, they appear in the list of comma-delimited resources in the tab for the panel, though they're not all open because only the first 5 listed resources are.)
How do I get rid of it? Now whenever I open my preferred Bible, all of the other resources are there. I know I can hide it by clicking the MR icon, but what if I want to eliminate that setup completely?

My goal is to keep my 6 preferred translations open side by side, with the ability to scroll them in sync. I don't mind if I have to scroll in a particular translation if a linked set is the best way to do this--it's just that I got the wrong one set up as my master in my linked set and I don't know how to change it. (Maybe I need to remove and recreate my linked set?) And I'm open to Multiple Resources if I can overcome the above problems.

What's the best way(s) to accomplish my goal? A screenshot of my linked set (which I've saved as a layout) is attached.

The point is that a linked set has no master - therefore no way to change it (or to establish it in the first place). All resources in the linked set will follow if you scroll any one of them, regardless which.

OK, Kathy, I'm going to get in trouble, but I'll take a shot, and then be corrected.

- Your 'master' is the first selected in your choices (it'll be on the left). In the resource panel selection, you can drag/drop the order.

- You can have bunches of them; the panel just keeps squeezing them in. How squeezable you want, is the limitation.

- There is a vertical vs horizontal choice, when you click on the arrow (to choose resources); icons upper-right. I'm not sure what limits a horizontal choice.

- The 'find' text box looks in your library for matching resources, collections, and tagged resources. I typically choose one of my tagged groups.

- The 'save' button doesn't save your choices; it saves the search-resources-text (the view).

- You select what you want (individual selection boxes); then click OUTSIDE the area. That's the trick. This part, I'll be corrected on!

Thanks DMB--I feel like maybe my understanding is increasing just a smidgeon. One key was realizing that clicking Save in the multiple resource view box toggles the list of selected resources on and off so I can select/deselect. Seems like an odd function for a save button, but there you go.

I have no idea why it wasn't opening all the resources I had selected, but suddenly the last one popped into the panel.

But the biggest thing seems to be that apparently my layout was already using multiple resources. And (I think) that explains why I couldn't change the master translation--it was the starting one when I set up the multiple resources view in the first place! Good grief.

Now that I know how to select/deselect resources for it, I undid my previous MR and created a new one. I think this will do what I want--I'll just save my layout with that MR panel and other desired ones open,

And apparently I have some learning to do about how links work, because I thought that was what was controlling my view.

I'm sure I'll be back with more questions as I continue to get used to this program. I started way back with Parsons, which became QuickVerse (or vice versa--too long ago), then Wordsearch, now Logos. And I may have forgotten one other step in there. I'm very tech savvy, but that's been a lot of change to absorb over many years!

Thanks, NB.Mick! As mentioned in my reply above, it turned out that I was already in multiple resource set, so of course the first translation was controlling scrolling. I need to learn more about linked sets now, because apparently I misunderstood them.

I know you're busy figuring it out some more.

But when you get the hang of it, some extra tips:

- The master > followers tracks on the reference in the master (left-most). If any follower doesn't have that reference, he just 'falls out' temporarily (until he matches, again). This can be advantageous. I typically put my main for-sure commentaries to the left (they always have the reference), and my loosy-goosy commentaries to the right ... they switch in and out, depending on if they comment on the passage.

- If you click on the hamburger icon (top-right), you'll see some more choices. These are handy when you want to apply a visual filter in-mass, or maybe an inline-search.

- Specifically, if you lose the header for the columns, it's the Locater option in the panel settings.

- As earlier mentioned, you can have multiple Multiviews. And if you want, you can link them together (or to a separate Bible, etc).

- Multivews work for any common indices. Lexicons are good; apparati. And even canaanite inscriptions.

- And don't be surprised if your 'master' always opens with multiview turned on (from the library, etc). It's just the way they planned it. I just turn it off and keep going (eg a Bible version).
