Logos 4 Transferring collections from one computer to another

Hello,

Is there any way that I can transfer a collection from one computer to another, with both computers using Windows based Logos 4? My co-worker is also using Logos 4, and I want to save him the time of having to create a particular collection.

Hi Mark - and welcome.

I think this is going to depend on how complex the collection is.

If it is simply defined by a "resources matching rule" as per below:

you could "copy" the resources string into a text file / email, transfer it to the other computer and paste it in.

However, the actual collection would only be the same if the corresponding resources on both computers were the same.

If your collection is more complex - for example using tags or ratings which you have created on your computer these would need to be replicated on the other computer.

I don't know of any mechanism to automate the resources which are added or excluded within a collection (the + / - areas in the picture above)

So I think its going to depend.

I created my collection by "drag and dropping" various books into the "plus these resources' area in the Collections builder. So there isn't any rule associated with the collection. I'm thinking that this list of books I created for my collection must be stored somewhere on my hard drive, but perhaps it isn't accessible.

Your question is about copying a collection to a different L4 user. (Your own collections will synchronize between all your installations of L4.)

This is not implemented yet. I'm not sure it will be or not.

But look at Graham's suggestion this will work, and has the advantage of automatically adapting to the other person's library, since in L4 collections are rule-based and therefore both adaptive and dynamic. So sending the rule(s) to your friend should build the same collection.

If you're not sure how to do that, check out the free Logos training videos on the page linked in my signature below. Go to that page and search the page for "collection." There are three. The first one, is the most basic, the other two offer more advanced strategies.

Saw your response above mine after I posted.

First, see if there's a way to create your collection dynamically (by rules), rather than using the method you used. It's easier and more manageable.

There are many strategies to do that. If you can give us an idea of what books comprise your collection we may be able to help you see how to do this in a dynamic way, rather than by using the method you described above. This would give several advantages, including this one: when you add a new resource that fits your rule criteria, it will automatically be added to your collection!

WOW! That's quite a collection. I wouldn't be able to create a rule for that either.

The best way to create a rule for that is to tag all the resources from the original Leaders Library 3, say with the tag LL3, then use the rule mytag:LL3 to make the collection. The task of tagging can be sped up substantially by the fact that you can select multiple resources at once (either with Shift+Click for a range of consecutive resources in the library or Ctrl+Click for discontiguous ones; filtering the library for each bunch of resources to be tagged can also help the process go more quickly).

That still doesn't help you share your collection with your co-worker, because it'd still be quite some work to go through tagging all the right books on his Library.

Logos has promised some more features to enable sharing of data between users (e.g., Notes and Passage Lists) in a future release someday. Collections might be included in that, but there has been no mention of exactly what data will be shareable. So I'm afraid we'll have to wait and see. And that doesn't help you in the meantime.

Yes, but you are very correct in saying that to tag the different resources with mytag, let's say "LL3" is much easier and time efficient than to add resources one by one to the collection. Also later, when you want to add the resource to the collection, you simply tag the resource with the same tag name. You can do it now even as you read or look at the book. Of course, finding the dynamic rule for the collection is always the best and even transferable to any other user.
