In the SHBC on 1 & 2 Kings, Brueggemann reference the title When Man Becomes God: Humanism and 'Hybris' in the Old Testament. Upon looking for it in Logos, I noticed it available here, with a collection of works by the author here. Brueggemann says of "When Man Becomes God" that,
"Donald Gowan has written clearly and eloquently on texts that show the arrogance of imperial powers that are taken to be rivals and therefore enemies of Yahweh...Gowan makes clear that the besetting temptation of superpowers is autonomy that shows up in policies of control, abuse, and exploitation that seem to serve state interest but are in fact superfluous to normal state interest. In such texts, Yahweh represents a deep, elemental resistance and curb to such aggrandizement."
Brueggemann, Walter. 2000. 1 & 2 Kings. Edited by Samuel E. Balentine. Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary. Macon, GA: Smyth & Helwys Publishing, Incorporated, 510.
I went ahead and purchased the set, but the one title looks to be very helpful. I just wanted to bring it to everyone's attention to see if we can get it into production.
