Logos Website - Book Guides

In the Bible Resource Guides on the website there is a section "Best Books." It appears to list 5 books for each book of the Bible. I am wondering where it pulls this information from. I am guessing that it may be from bestcommentaries.com but I am not sure. Does anyone have any info regarding this? Thanks!

First, I would distinguish "best for what purpose" as the use to which you wish to put the commentary is a critical element. Think:

best for contemporary academic work
best for history of ideas, history of theology work
best for encouraging an understanding of scripture that encourages spiritual growth (think heavy on the liturgical & contemplative)
best for encouraging an understanding of scripture that encourages conversion of the world (Christian social activism)
best for polemics/apologetics/teaching work

There are probably other categories that don't immediately come to mind. Is there a particular purpose that is of interest to you?

criteria:

few factual errors which is usually the result of rigid bias or limited exposure
broad range of works cited or offered for further reading
referenced frequently by subsequent works
recognition of areas of scholarly consensus while still providing some areas of controversy which generate papers in academic journals. A scholar who is afraid to express his controversial views is likely too convention-bound to speak the truth rather than convention
sufficient background on the primary controversies re: the text so that the reader understands the context of the author's position

best for history of ideas, history of theology work

the first to express a particular position or to expound upon it - or, at least, the first written record preserved
argument used to support the position becomes one of the standard arguments in polemics/apologetics
referenced frequently by subsequent works on the topic
used as a reference for church documents in support of (denominational) positions, or as catalyst for a denominational split or explicitly denounced by church authorities
position is represented subsequently in sermons over a broad period of time (this indicates the spread of the idea/position throughout the population)

I'm sure there are many points that didn't come to mind while I was writing this.
