I do not know if it will work for other types of books, but for Bible Commentaries in Personal Books, there is a field for “Series Title.” Giving all the books in the series the same name in this field should create a book series.

How do you create a "series" out of personal books that you add?
in fact you can easily make a series out of any set of books (PB or otherwise) in the library. Just select them in details view and open the information pane, there will be a "set series" field.

The same way you create a Series out of purchased books i.e. select them in Library, click on the Information button and make the change under the Series heading.
Be sure that the PB's have the same index e.g. bible milestones, English headwords, Strong's numbers, else they will not act as a series.

I have found changing the series title in the information pane helpful when I prefer an older title in a commentary series as opposed to a newer title (or vice versa). By editing the series titles, I can make my favorite the primary volume in the series.
For personal books, it seems that editing the series title in the information pane supersedes any series title placed in the PB series title field. I will keep this in mind for future use. [Y]
