New Computer Questions

I will be buying a new laptop before the end of the year. I am a Logos Now subscriber.

After an SSD (which I have had for years) and 16GB of RAM, what is the most important factor for speed? Is it the processor or the video chip? Or something else?

Well, that old SSD could be a weakness. What type is it: SATA or PCIe?  A SATA one needs to be replaced as that is the old Hard Drive interface which is several orders slower than a PCIe interface.

The processor is the next most important whilst Logos will happily run on an integrated video. A dedicated video card/chip is not essential.

I assume you prefer Windows, so an affordable i5/i7 will do and a gaming spec version is not necessarily out of the picture provided it is adequately cooled (e.g. i5-11400H with 45W TDP) and there is a good 4 hour battery.

I think he was just saying that he’s been using one for years so it‘s a given that he’ll get one in the new computer, not that he intends to use the same one.

Yes, I will be getting a new SSD with the computer. My present computer is four years old I think. It was a new SSD then, which ran Logos slower than my old SSD even though the computer specs were higher.

I only use Windows. (I can only stoop so far :D).

    I am looking at a Samsung Galaxybook Pro 2 - i7, 16 GB, 512 SSD (something like this https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-galaxy-book2-pro-360-2-in-1-13-3-amoled-touch-screen-laptop-intel-12th-gen-evo-core-i7-16gb-ddr5-memory-512-gb-ssd-silver/6501579.p?skuId=6501579)

The last three or four laptops I have had have been Lenovos. Not sure what to get this time, but Logos is the main concern. Everything else I do would run fine on any reasonable system.

I use a fast Dell and a MacBook Air with an M2 chip. The Mac is much faster and runs more smoothly than the Dell. The dell has more memory and just as fast a SSD, but the M2 is superior to the Intel chips in Dell and overall is faster.

Now, if you don't want Apple, then go for the most powerful PC you can afford with as much memory and a good quality NVME M.2 storage. SSD was nice but an NVME M.2 is usually better.

I bought a new desktop about half year ago. It is close to Kevin's recommendations. I did buy a dedicated graphics because I tend to use complex layouts, and it works well.

Also it turned out that it is very beneficial to check and update to the newest drivers.

I ditched the desktop this last time I bought a puter..... I bought a laptop... I can unplug and take it with me...which I do a lot. (I like to study in odd places. [:D])

But I just couldn't see buying 2 puters any more...  Years back, there were huge differences in speed and ability to "add things" ... but now I don't find that to be the case for me.

Thanks so far. It will certainly be a laptop and a PC.

Screen is too small for full HD 1920x1080. 15.6" screen is better for Logos as windows and text size can be larger.

    Why Touch screen?

The SSD appears to be ok as NVMe is stated. And the i7 processor should be OK.

    Hello, Larry:
I just replaced my hp Envy laptop (hard drive and external monitor) with another hp Envy (SSD and two external monitors). There's enough screen real estate to land airplanes. The increase in speed is two or three times faster. Recommended.

Thanks to all for the info and suggestions.

I like the smaller size (which is what I have now). My church study has two external monitors so I have a total of three screens with the laptop. At home I have one external monitor.

My main concern is speed. I might look at the HP again. I had one before but then went to Lenovo.

Have the Book Pro 360 which I love but it is a niche computer.  I have Dell 17" 2n1 laptops and an Alienware desktop as back ups to this unit.  I stay on the Galaxy Book Pro 24/7 because it is powerful but super slim and convenient. I don't know if I would have purchased it as my only unit, but I have no regrets about the purchase.  I would get the Pro 2 360 if I didn't have this one.  Will probably get the next generations as I love this thing. I opted for the 1gb M.2 drive and then added an additional. 15" monitor with 16gb ram.  All my other units have 32gb. Be blessed with whatever you choose.  Logos to me doesn't really push a unit to its limits.

Addendum:  Samsung's integration with your phone, tablet and TV's is phenomenal, and the S pen is included too.
