L/V 10 Tip of the Day #26 Visual filter for DSS in DCH
Another tip of the day (TOTD) series for Logos/Verbum 10. They will be short and often drawn from forum posts. Feel free to ask questions and/or suggest forum posts you'd like to see included. Adding comments about the behavior on mobile and web apps would be appreciated by your fellow forumites. A search for "L/V 10 Tip of the Day site:community.logos.com" on Google should bring the tips up.
This tip is based on the forum post: Visual Filter for Dead Sea Scrolls - Logos Forums
Yes, the title is an example of using three letter acronyms that are not familiar to all Logos/Verbum users:
- DSS = Dead Sea Scrolls
- DCH = Dictionary of Classical Hebrew
The goal is to highlight in some way the references to the Dead Sea Scrolls in the lexicon. Unfortunately, the abbreviations section of the DCH does not give a list of all the Dead Sea Scrolls manuscripts:

Other abbreviations will be found in the section entitled, The Sources
David J. A. Clines, ed., The Dictionary of Classical Hebrew (Sheffield, England: Sheffield Academic Press; Sheffield Phoenix Press, 1993–2011), 89.
I go to The Dead Sea Scrolls Study Edition to understand how to select all references to the Dead Sea Scrolls.
This makes me think that 1Q* i.e. one-que-wild card, 2Q*, 3Q* through 11Q* should pick up all the Dead Sea Scroll references with a few false positives from British postal zones. From this one makes a Visual Filter and applies it to the DCH:
To build the Visual Filter:
- In the Documents Menu on the Task Bar, click on New
- Select Visual Filter
- Select the Books tab
- Click on the pencil image to edit the Visual Filter name
- Set to search all Text in The Dictionary of Classical Hebrew, Volumes I-VIII
- Set the search criteria to 1Q* OR 2Q* OR 3Q* OR 4Q* OR 5Q* OR 6Q* OR 7Q* OR 8Q* OR 9Q* OR 10Q* OR 11Q*
- Select a highlighting style
To apply the Visual Filter to The Dictionary of Classical Hebrew:
- Open the resource
- In the resource panel, select Visual Filters in the Resource Task Bar
- Under Visual Filter, select the visual filter you just built
The principles used here can be used to build other special purpose visual filters.
