It seems reasonable that to open a note or highlight tied to a verse of the Bible, you could right-click to select the whole verse and click "Open Notes and Highlights." However, "Open Notes and Highlights" doesn't appear when the selection is set to "Reference". Instead, I have to drag a selection around the verse which fully includes the verse, and right click to dismiss the smaller popup menu.

You can select a word and use "Selection".

What does the smaller popup menu contain?

Unfortunately, selecting a word does not work because it seems that the selection must include the whole reference in order for it to appear.

Likewise, the smaller popup menu does not allow me to access the existing notes and highlights.

I still am not sure I understand what you mean. For example, you say that the whole verse must be selected for "it" to appear - what is it? And I get the same note/highlight options in the Context Menu and in the Selection Menu.  A screen shot please?

Does the new option for notes and highlights in the left sidebar of your Bible fill this need?

    See images below.

Selecting a selection within the verse that has a note does not give you the option to "Open Notes and Highlights". This may be expected behavior, but I would rather it give me the option to Open all Notes and Highlights that intersect with the selection.

Selecting the entire verse does not give me the option to "Open Notes and Highlights" even though the note was tied to that verse. This is what I'm surprised about.

In order to "Open Notes and Highlights", I have to select more than the verse, being sure to include the whole verse, and then I only have the option of "Open Notes and Highlights" if I have it set to Selection rather than Reference.

This would be the Selection Menu  (controlled by "Show Selection Menu" in Program Settings).

If you click the three dots  ... it will open the right-click Context Menu and provide access to the Notes and Highlights provided you choose "Selection" on the left side.

If you right-click a word (without selecting it), the Context Menu will open and work as described above.

I agree that the behavior is unexpected; I would also expect the option to be shown by reference as well as by selection; I found the new note view via the left side panel to also be less predictable than I thought. Either a bug report or a suggestion is in order.

Perhaps there is an unaccounted difference between our notes that is giving us different results. My note is anchored to the verse reference, it has an icon rather than a highlight and I don't get the same "Edit notes" option:

That is the difference. The anchored note must have a highlight (the icon makes no difference).

You have good reason to state it is a bug.

I also reckon it should work on Reference (but this may have to be put to the Feedback site).
