Any way to auto save a layout?

Logos just crashed on me when I double clicked on a word and I lost all the different resources I had opened.

It would be nice if you could toggle an auto save for your layout somehow.

Sorry about the 'Grandma sucking eggs' bit but I have to check.

You have checked the 'last saved layout' to make sure that it wasn't saved just before the crash?

If you haven't done so, also look at the layouts menu to see what was saved close to the time you experienced the crash. There may be a Snapshot or an auto save when you previously closed the program (not a crash) that you can use.

I am curious how you think an auto save should work. Save every so many minutes? Save after a single change to a layout?

I would see this as slowing down Logos because of the "checking event"....  I may be a minute checking, but every minute checking adds up to pretty soon we have program slow down.   Something to think about....

See https://wiki.logos.com/Layouts  for the various ways you can create and save a layout, where you anticipate all the resources you will need to open. But you might already know much of this and manual saving is not sufficient, so you should create a suggestion on the Feedback site.

I wish the name of the layout would appear in the Logos heading bar when a layout was opened... I have several layouts... and forget which one I am in..... It would be a nicety!

    You mean something like this?

There seems to be a bug that this doesn't show for the FL provided layouts, only for user created layouts. I'll create a bug report.

We won't mention how many times I've posted that resources wouldn't scroll together when I was in the front material rather than indexed material [:$]

Yes sir I appreciate all of the suggestions. I guess I was thinking something similar to what Microsoft Word has where you have auto save with every change unless you don't want it to auto save and you just turn it off.

It is typically only a set back when I am in the middle of something and Logos crashes which seems to happen more and more often since the latest update and I lose my work.

It would be nice to have a feature that would allow you to set Logos to save everything that was open when the program was closed for the times you forget and close it out without saving or it crashes unexpectedly.

I'm no programmer but I'm not sure if I see the downside to adding a toggle feature to allow or disallow auto save of layouts since it is the difference between the program saving for you or you needing to press the update current layout button that you can create and drag to your toolbar.

Thanks you are correct I have learned much for all of you faithful Logos forum members over the years. I typically only come back to post issues I have but I really appreciate all the work each of you do and especially those who work on this great software.

It does already automatically save your current layout when you close Logos. There is an option in Settings "At Startup Open to: "Most recent layout"". That is my default setting. I am not sure if that is the default Logos setting, but I recommend it to you. Note that you can select it open to the past layout on the specific computer you are working on, or the last layout you worked on any machine.

Yes that is my setting as well there are times where the program closes before I have saved my current layout though which is what I'm talking about. I'm just saying that it would be nice to be able to tell it to auto save a particular layout as I go so that if I forget to update after every resource I open or it closes unexpectedly I can get back to where I was. It also seems like the save the layout when you close the program feature is hit and miss especially across my home and office computers.

Anyway I don't believe the feature currently exists maybe one day it will or I will be more diligent about remembering to update current layout.

    EDIT

I realize this has to do more with my workflow and the way I use layouts than the program being deficient. I'm just saying it'd make things more convenient for me if it did what I wanted it do without me having to think about it. :) Maybe it can finish writing my sermons while we're at it.

I thought I knew how layouts got saved.  Since L4.  But with this thread, I started checking mine.

    - Obviously there's 'Update Active Layout' (either the menu item, or command-box).  Identifies as just the name of the layout (in saved list).  I thought there was a hot-key combo, but I don't see it anywhere.  Used to be?

    - When I close the app, it saves.  On my Mac, I do that daily; on my PC I do that every few months.  So that one's a major iffy!

    - Then there's 'Snapshots'  ... there used to be bunches (and people complained).  Now they seem now and then; my last one was last month sometime.

Which brings up the next issue ... absent the last 6 days, the saved list is by month. Specific 'day' is too hard? That's really helpful (when disaster happens).  And, as I go back, some more snapshots ... until end of the line. A single month available?

Finally, the mystery menu choice: 'Update to Current Snapshot'. Update 'what' to 'what'??  Vs load the snapshot? Vs save to the snapshot?

Well, anyway, I just click the update-active and keep going.  Not my UI.
