Internet access necessary for search?

I was at our Wednesday Bible Study last night, and our internet was down. I could access the network, but periodically the outgoing connection doesn't exist, and the whole system has to be restarted (small town, rural America.

Someone asked a question, and I was trying to search Logos (beta 22.0.23). The search failed. I didn't get a screenshot of the failure message, unfortunately.

The search was for zion AND river. It failed in both Passages and Fuzzy.

Is internet access required for any searches in Logos, or was there some anomaly taking place in my system?

I didn't think so; I wondered if maybe the Fuzzy search required it. I restarted Logos and that didn't help. I didn't have time to restart my computer because the study was going on. This morning search worked and I hadn't restarted my computer.

Probably just one of those things.

Fuzzy Search does require an Internet connection.

I have also noticed that the Logos desktop app does not like it if you have a WiFi connection that is slow or access to the Internet non-existent. This happens to me a lot when I am traveling, either at a campground or on a plane, It can happen the computer hibernated when it had an Internet connection and then when I restarted the computer there was no Internet connection or it is super slow. I think Logos gets confused when it thinks that it has an Internet connection, but that connection does not work well.

My solution is turn off WiFi, then restart Logos. Now Logos knows it has no Internet and behaves appropriately. Of course some features that require Internet are not available, such as fuzzy searches and Morph Query Document searches.

I assume you're on Windows, which surprises me. For years, Logos didn't blink, wifi on or off (I usually keep it off).

This round I'm on a new Mac M1, and Logos is pretty unpredictable. Factbook, especially, seems at a loss, in detecting wifi on or off. The library ... pretty much doesn't know. The little app-update icon says he knows; I doubt it.

So, a restart is a sure thing when the wifi is on.

One suggestion would be for Logos to a quick internal check of download speed periodically before attempting something that requires a cloud search that would involve returning a lot of data. It could then indicate that connection speed is degraded, so the user could cancel the search. I get such a message from time to time with other programs. It is better than making the program lock up.

To be fair, I have not been in a traveling situation with slow/erratic Internet for the past few months. But missionaries, travelers and rural users encounter this a lot. Also when I travel out of the country, I have data limits on my cell phone hotspot, so turning off Use Internet in Logos desktop is wise if I think of it

I hadn't thought about turning off WIFI before restarting Logos; neither did I turn internet access off in the settings. Thanks for the info, everyone.
