Why I don't use semantic roles and case frames more - an appeal for votes on suggestions
Search requests in these forums are often the grating sound of fingernails on a chalkboard as people consistently use morphological case as a stand in for grammatical and semantic roles. Unfortunately, I understand why as Logos/Verbum sets up many hurdles to using the right information.
I'd list these hurdles as:
- having removed the semantic roles from the context menu and Factbook and having never included them in the Information tool (IIRC), the data is not at our fingertips. The substitute morphological data is
- while book, bible, and morphological search arguments may be mixed, the clause data which includes grammatical and semantic roles is isolated ... which also means no visual filters
- the roles and case frame data is available in the exegetical guide which those of us who are not original language scholars have little reason to access
So I congratulate Logos/Verbum for having added very useful information, made many blog posts teaching us to use it, then hiding it so we would make minimal use of it. I would suggest that current usage statistics reflect the difficulty of access not the interest in the data. There are many suggestions on the feedback site:
- Additional Factbook sections | Faithlife
- Add semantic roles back into Context Menu | Faithlife
- Semantic roles in Bible Browser | Faithlife
- Consistency in clause participants guide | Faithlife
- Create semantic role action Bible view | Faithlife
- Filters for semantic roles and grammatical roles | Faithlife
- Role data for individuals, places, things, topics, et. al. | Faithlife (include roles within labels as well)
