Hebrew Question

The word is רָעַשׁ . I would like to know if the stress is on the first or second syllable. Strong (7493) doesn't say and I didn't find any examples of the word in the Bible that are not inflected...which can change the stress. Strong for some odd reason doesn't show the stress for this word, perhaps because he couldn't find any uninflected examples either. Confused

The verb רַעַשׁ is stressed on the first syllable, but that doesn't mean anything. I've found words of similar characteristics that show both first and second syllable stress (though not at the same time, of course). If someone has an answer, I would like to have a reference to check. Thanks.

In the lexical forms provided, the noun רַעַשׁ would be accented on the first syllable and the verb רָעַשׁ would be accented on the last syllable. Any of the Hebrew grammars with paradigm charts would be able to show the patterns. The verb is a 2-gutteral (paradigm 5 in Jouon-Muraoka's Grammar of Biblical Hebrew, described in more detail in §69 of the same), and the noun is a qatl gutteral (shown with the example נַ֫עַר in paradigm 17 column four of J-M, and described in §96).

Thanks. Of the couple dozen grammars I have, you quoted one I don't have...but you've given me both an answer and enough to research it out. Much appreciated.

Thanks for pointing out that I switched the noun-verb id...not sure how I did that. I was looking right at it when I wrote the OP.

While I've got your input, Vincent, I have noticed for quite awhile that Hebrew verbs are often translated by nouns and vice versa. What's your take on that? Give me your two-cents worth, or even a nickel's worth if you're so minded.

The Hebrew verb can take the form of a participle, which sometimes functions completely like a noun. Likewise in English, we have the gerund - a gerund is when the -ing form of a verb is used like a noun or adjective. Between the translator's choice to use gerund forms to translate nouns and the use of nouns to translate pure noun participles, that probably explains most of what you're seeing.
