Clumsy Highlighting on Android

Hello everyone,

I've been using Logos/Verbum for years. While I love the main desktop app, I continue to find the Android app clumsy, most especially the elementary feature of highlighting text.

By way of comparison, when I read any book on my Kindle app, I swipe over any text and it's highlighted. If I swipe too much text I can backtrack and highlight less of it and/or delete the highlighting in an instant. It's effortless and never causes any issue.

When I try to highlight on the Logos Android app, I can kind of swipe and highlight but it's incredibly clumsy. Often the highlighting will stop in a sentence before the end quotation marks. If I try to highlight a little more, it starts catching the next sentence. If I try to highlight 2-3 lines the highlighting is incredibly slow and unresponsive. If I highlight too much text and try to "backtrack" to highlight less, the highlighting doesn't respond unless I "unhighlight" the entire selection.

In short, highlighting on Logos/Verbum Android is so clumsy that I often find myself avoiding the app altogether and reading some other book on Kindle instead.

This has been going on for years. Anyone else have that experience? Any response from the Logos/ Verbum Android app team?

I'm sorry, but laughter came to mind. I deleted my FL mobile apps. I just don't have the patience with them. My Kindles get my reading-time, plus my Mac.

Similar experience but I still use the Logos Android app. I mostly use it in the bus, and the buses don't run very smoothly and in the winter the ride is bumpy.

My solution is to highlight roughly what I want, and after finishing the book I fix them in the PC. It is interesting to check what I've highlighted and sometimes wondering why I did it in some places.

Gold package, and original language material and ancient text material, SIL and UBS books, discourse Hebrew OT and Greek NT. PC with Windows 11

Unfortunately all Logos mobile apps are clumsy.

Clearly FL doesn't put enough effort on them.

Olive Tree app is smooth and clean while Logos keeps running (when it happens) as if it was made by newbies.

I like the mobile apps, but do understand some of these comments. However, FL is in a catch 22. There are some users who continually want the mobile app to evolve into the desktop app and add more and more features. There are others who want it to be simpler and to do the basics reallly well. As the app gets bloated from new features and capibilites, it makes doing the simpler things more difficult.

I continue to use the android app because I like using an E-ink device to read, but the highlighting is certainly frustrating. Selecting the text is never a smooth process and if too much is selected I also find that I have to delete the entire highlight and redo it. It seems impossible to move backwards. I often just leave the highlight including the beginning of the next sentence.

My experience of the Android app has been very similar. Sadly the conclusion I've draw is that the QA effort behind the app has been very lacking at times. Long-standing issues have been there for years and either not identified or simply ignored. For instance I've reported a while number of issues with notes and text editing which have been there for a number of major versions.

On a happier note, from interacting with FL including the senior leaders it seems that they have listened and more effort is being put into the app.  Issues are being resolved and the quality of the app is steadily increasing. Progress is fairly slow, in my view, but the app provides a much better experience now than it did when the last major version was released a year ago.

My feeling is to stick with it and be patient, as FL are listening and trying to resolve the general quality issue with the app.

    Hope that helps

    Paul

PS I reported the issues with highlight that we mentioned a few weeks ago so FL are already aware

  • Good to know that I's not the only one frustrated by these issues. I sure would like to hear back from a Logos/Faithlife person. It would be nice to hear them acknowledge the problem and get some kind of confirmation that they are working on it.

Hi André, as Paul mentioned, we have a case created for this issue and will reach back out on this forum thread when it has been resolved. Thank you for your patience!
