Performance improvements?

I know that there is a strong push to finish the feature set for Logos 4, but are there any definite plans to improve performance? I have a dual core 2GHz CPU, 3GB memory, 5400RPM harddrive, and integrated graphics (I know, it's killing me). I can't buy a new laptop for Logos 4, but I can't really use Logos 4 in a productive manner as it is. It is by far the slowest application on my PC.

I don't say this in anger or just to gripe -- I have a ton of resources in L4, and I really like the new features in L4. I just wish I could use them.

There has been indication from Logos in the past that optimization would come. There has been improvements in performance for some features with some performance issues still lagging (wild card searches, some notes lag etc.). I think logos is on the right track in developing and releasing features that work and look forward to seeing some of the speed / performance issues addressed in the future.

They seem to be working steadily on performance issues. I expect they will continue to do so but it depends upon the cause of your particular performance issues how much advantage you will gain from each change.

I'm running integrated graphics , and modestly better specs on memory and CPU on my laptop. I would bet that your biggest performance bottleneck is in your Hard Drive. I have a 7200 RPM drive and I am satisfied with Logos' speed (I avoid using notes, though). In fact it is not significantly slower than on my desktop with more Ram and dedicated graphics. If I were you I would get a new hard drive, it's much cheaper than a new computer.

I really agree with Kevin on this. You can get a 320G 7200rpm Western Digital from Amazon for about $65. If you can afford that much for an upgrade, you should see a lot of improvement.

Hi the hard drive is definitely the problem, If you have never ran a scan disk I would do that first to see if you have bad blocks on the hard drive. Then if there are no problems with that a hard drive upgrade would definitely see an improvement many pc stores will do it for you, or if you think you are capable then upgrade kits that will include copying software and cables are the most straight forward and no reload required.
I have upgraded computers running logos from 5400 to 7200 and my own computer from 7200 to solid state drive . Both gave significant speed improvements and the solid state machine runs like a dream with logos, but solid state drives do cost a lot, but some times still cheaper than a new pc.

Also consider the size of the cache/buffer onboard the hard drive. The larger the better, but cost escalates quickly.

I've messed around with this in the past and have come to this conclusion: Unless you really, really like to tinker "under the hood" of Windows, and you really, really know what you're doing, you are always better off letting Windows manage your page file.

BTW, don't let performance "optimizers" do it for you either. For most of us, these programs actually degrade performance.

If you're still on the fence, consider this: Logos4 is a system intensive program, that is expecting to find system defaults. If you change those system defaults, you're on your own for fixing performance issues and/or bugs in the program.

EDIT: What Paul is talking about is the internal hard drive cache (not the system cache).

It looks like you have several options. Depending on available funding, you can:

1) upgrade your hard drive, as others have noted in the response. (Many places to purchase one, but I personally use newegg dot com)

2) upgrade your OS to Windows 7 32-bit (if you have not already). At one time, I upgraded my Pentium 4 (I built in 2003) from Windows XP SP3 to Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit and noticed a general performance increase. I didn't have Logos at that time.

3) purchase a hard drive defrag /optimizer such as Diskeeper 2010. I use it all the time. It automatically defrags my hard drives in real time while I use my computer. This tool works better than the built-in defragger in Windows.

Or use a good quality free one like the one from Auslogics (though I'd stick strictly with their defragger and not bother with the "comprehensive" performance optimization suite, which is also free, but as Richard mentioned above, those often do more harm than good.)

If you are using Windows 7, you can launch the Resource Monitor tool to view hard disk activity while running applications. See the screenshot below. This tool runs in real-time, but there is a delay as it updates. Note that the orange line in the top graph corresponds to the Logos application.

Vista OS may have this exact tool also (can't verify). I don't know if Windows XP has this or not.

You may want to check out DiskMon and other tools from Windows Sysinternals (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb545027.aspx) for hard disk data and optimizations. I've not use these tools, but perhaps others on this forum can comment on their usefulness. Some of these tools look dated.

Windows XP has System Monitor. I found this article about how to manage the performance counters: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305610 .
