Reading Plans

I have used the Reading Plans for years and always wondered how Logos divided up the content by the window of time chosen. For example, I choose to read my Bible through in 12 months. But I am sure the daily divisions are no where close to equal amounts for 365 readings.

For example:

Todays reading was Proverbs 22:17 to Ecclesiastes 1.

Tomorrow is Ecc 2 and 3.

That is hugely different amount of reading. Confused?

It tries to be equal, but a 12 month Plan for the whole bible by Default does not seem enough time to produce equal sessions. I see Prov 22.17 - 23.35 + 5 more sessions on Proverbs followed by 4 sessions on Eccl in a Plan with 700 sessions. An OTNT Plan seems to more even again e.g. Gen-Mal | Mt-Rev

Limiting the Plan by Chapter seems to produce a better spread e.g. an OTNT plan over 373 sessions.

Thanks Dave. I don't know their database platform, but I am very sure it would count words like MS Word does. Then a simple equation dividing the total number of words by 365 for a 1 year time or 90 for 3 months etc should not be difficult.

Not be difficult but it would not be satisfactory to most users because it could cause a break in a sentence, paragraph, hymn . . . the breaks have to be logically acceptable as you read the text as well as of similar length.

Well the current breaks are far, far from acceptable right now. Just look at my example above. And databases run on rules and a rule can easily be made by a programmer to stop at the end of a sentence, end of a verse etc. Or put a temporary flag that you erase tomorrow when you start. I'm not trying to be difficult, but I have developed and worked on databases for years.

I know you aren't. And while I am retired, I also have many years of experience on hierarchical and relational databases. In fact my disk experience goes back to the days when you have to calculate your own addresses. [8-|]

I also have beta tested multiple iterations of trying to get an algorithm that divided all books satisfactorily IIRC the current one depends on extra data for chapter breaks ... data that may not have been added to all books. Through beta testing, I have come to appreciate that it is a much more intractable problem than it seems even after fairly deep consideration.

I suggest you raise that as a BUG in the Logos Desktop App forum.
