I highly recommend getting 16Gb of ram at an absolute minimum nowadays. The operating systems are already taking almost the entire portion of the 8GB of ram immediately from boot up. Just my 2 cents.

I went for 16 GB and have had no problems with memory. I can't tell how I would have been with 8 GB. I know 8 GB wasn't enough on the intel chips.

Get 16GB. I had a first-release MacBook Air M1 with 8GB. My only regret was not getting 16GB.

I still know little of the differences among various Mac models, but when I was researching iMacs for my wife and myself, I noted some mass-retailer deals (Amazon specifically) at very tempting prices. However, it didn't take long to realize that these were price-pointed to compete with Windows systems, and 8GB vs 16GB RAM wasn't the only compromise. Watch out for less-capable graphics, a less-than-1TB SSD, and a lack of physical ethernet support (last point of limited importance to many). Speaking of network, if you have an older wifi router, you might want to pony-up for a new one with Wifi 6 capability, which would be a significant improvement.

I agree with much of what Robert says about 'Mac Deals' apart from the comment about 'less capable graphics'. I think that this is a bit of a red herring. Indeed many visual arts folk use Macs and have only praise for the graphics capabilities.

    Thank for all the advice.

I realized this morning, that my macbook air is only 8gb (m1), and does really well with Logos.

I'll probably get the M2 with 512gb and 16gb any way.

I did learn you don't want the 256 gb not just because half of that would be my logos library... but because 256 only makes use of half of the available hard drive bandwidth.

apart from the comment about 'less capable graphics'.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. My comparison was between the 'mass-retailer' iMac bundle and the more fully-spec'd iMac one might order from apple.com or their store. The typical bargain unit has a 7-Core GPU, while the unit one might custom order can have an 8-Core GPU. Now, do I know the difference? Probably not, but I thought it was worth including in the caveat.

When the Mac mini first came out plenty of YouTube reviewers did comparisons and found little to no bump with a 16GB of RAM over 8. It may offer future proof insurance, but for most of us 8 GB will be fine.

Do a search on YT for comparisons. One I remember was TheEveryDayDad - https://www.youtube.com/@TheEverydayDad

I have an M1 and M2 with 8GB of Ram and it is more than enough. With the beauty of unified RAM and the way that unified RAM works in conjunction with your CPU and GPU, unless you are editing 4K and 8K multilayer videos, 16GB is over kill and not necessary for the additional $200 that Apple with charge for the additional RAM. If the largest work force on your computer is Logos, then 8GB is more than enough,. That is what I have, and Logos works great. When I give Logos a request for information, especially on my M2, the results are literally instant. Do not waste your money on the 16GB. Again, unless you are a video editor, you will not see a different in the operations of the Mac, due to the unified RAM.
