Another tip of the day (TOTD) series for Logos/Verbum 10. They will be short and often drawn from forum posts. Feel free to ask questions and/or suggest forum posts you'd like to see included. Adding comments about the behavior on mobile and web apps would be appreciated by your fellow forumites. A search for "L/V 10+ Tip of the Day site:community.logos.com" on Google should bring the tips up as should this Reading List within the application.

This tip is inspired by the forum post: L/V 10+ Tip of the Day #173 Context Menu: below the line: Biblical events - Logos Forums

12. Speaker — Lists the person speaking. This information matches that shown with the “Speaker labels” visual filter.
13. Addressee — Lists the person being spoken to. This information matches that shown with the “Addressee labels” visual filter.

Verbum Help (Bellingham, WA: Faithlife, 2022).

These tags predate labels.  They apply only to direct speech (think speech that requires quotation marks in English.) They have their own icons and a visual filter to show them in the Bible text.

To turn on the addressee visual filter:

Mouse over the addressee icon identifies the addressee

The Context Menu shows the addressee and offers links to Factbook and to searches.

Similarly, there is an icon and filter for speaker:

A pop-up identifies the speaker on hover.

Again the Context Menu links one to Factbook and Search.

These tags allow you to answer questions such as what does the Bible say Saul said to David? Who heard Jesus say "come follow me"? Which son did Noah curse? It does not cover what did Paul say about marriage in the sense of what does Paul say about marriage in the epistles because the epistles are writings not direct speech.

To find "cursed" in Noah's speech search for cursed IN speaker:"Noah (builder of ark)"

To find Jesus speaking to both James and John without regard to who else might be addressed use speaker:Jesus AND addressee:("John (son of Zebedee)" AND "James (son of Zebedee)")

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

    A few points of interest:

    • speaker:Jesus INTERSECTS addressee:("John (son of Zebedee)" AND "James (son of Zebedee)") is more correct
      • AND appears to be correct only if used in a  Verse search
    • AND within addressee: would not work in Logos 9, which requires a more complex expression.
      • specifying multiple values can work with other keywords.
    • a Books search avoids the listing of multiple verses as in Mt 10 (and will show the problem of using AND instead of INTERSECTS)
