Can you tell me if this is correct?

There are different dative types, depending on the context.
In Rom. 6,10+11 the dative of reference is used.
This is where the word "for" comes from in the translation because it denotes a reference. In German, however, it is often understood to mean that person A does something for person B. From the meaning, however, it is to be handed down that the life we have now is divine. Life has the direct relationship with God. It originates from God and is from God. That is, for us, we "live God." We live him out. We live in him. Through him. And towards him.
Therefore the word "for" is a very unfavorable translation in Romans 6:10,11 (see also Gal. 2:19; 2 Cor. 5:15).

Welcome to the Logos forums. I assure you, I'm not about to get trapped in a discussion of whether a particular translation is favorable/very unfavorable. I'm here to help with using the software and knowing the resources.

As M.J. said, the forums are not a place to discuss interpretations (although that does happen sometimes). Regarding the resources we have, I learned early in my preaching ministry that the men who translated the Scriptures in English, from Wycliff on down, tended to be extremely smart and capable scholars (this is not always the case, but the majority of the time). I would compare them and go from there.

Unfortunately, they tend to track existing theology, plus earlier translations (presuming a solid greek base). But your point is interesting in the early Syriac ... it pulls the greek conjunction across directly. I don't know enough about syriac, to know if that was syriac, or an already 'fixed' key Christian wording.

Agree about contextual interpretations of dative spelling while aware of different dative types by various scholars. Right Click in Logos can show Lexham Syntactic Greek New Testament: SBL Edition tagging in the Society of Biblical Literature Greek New Testament: e.g. ἁμαρτίᾳ having "Instrument of Dative" in Romans 6:6 and "Dative of Respect" in Romans 6:10 & Romans 6:11

56.⁽⁴¹⁾The dative τῷ θεῷ is indeed often (saepe quidem) a dative of interest, and always when in conjunction with a verb (si ad verbum accedit) as: ὃ δὲ ζῇ, ζῇ τῷ θεῷ Rom 6:10; perhaps also when used with an adjective as 2 Cor 10:4 τὰ ὅπλα … δυνατὰ τῷ θεῷ πρὸς …, but with an adjective τῷ θεῷ may also be a Hebraism giving the sense of an «elative» superlative, as Acts 7:20 ἀστεῖος τῷ θεῷ i. e. handsome even in God’s estimation—«very handsome indeed»; cf. also Jonah 3:3 πόλις μεγάλη τῷ θεῷ.

188. The dative of advantage and disadvantage (dativus commodi et incommodi) with various verbs serves to designate the person whose interest is affected. (1) Μαρτυρεῖν τινι ‘to bear witness to someone’ Mt 23:31, Lk 4:22 etc. (Ἀνα-)πληροῦται αὐτοῖς (D al. ἐπʼ αὐτοῖς) ἡ προφητεία Mt 13:14, cf. Lk 18:31 (περί with genitive D), 1 P 5:9. Ἔκρινα ἐμαυτῷ (‘for myself’) τοῦτο 2 C 2:1, cf. Herm Man 12.3.6 σεαυτῷ κέκρικας τοῦ μὴ δύνασθαι. (2) Paul uses several combinations especially loosely (often θεῷ, κυρίῳ) as 2 C 5:13 εἴτε γὰρ ἐξέστημεν, θεῷ (it happened for God’s sake)· εἴτε σωφρονοῦμεν, ὑμῖν (in your interest).—Γαμεῖσθαί τινι Mk 10:12, 1 C 7:39 (§101) and μνηστεύεσθαί τινι (§191(4)) also probably belong here.—Mayser ii 2, 270ff.; Rob. 538f.; Smyth §§1481ff.

(1) Μεριμνᾶν Mt 6:25 (Lk 12:22) ‘about life … body’ (other constructions §176(2)). Ἀνέβη ὁ καπνὸς ταῖς προσευχαῖς Rev 8:4 is also probably dat. commodi; cf. 3 (Winer §31, 6 [Winer–M. 270f.]; acc. to Mlt. 75 [117] sociative instrumental).

(2) R 14:4 τῷ ἰδίῳ κυρίῳ στήκει ἢ πίπτει; 6 ὁ φρονῶν τὴν ἡμέραν κυρίῳ φρονεῖ· καὶ ὁ ἐσθίων κυρίῳ ἐσθίει (‘in honor of the Lord’). Ἐμοὶ κάμψει πᾶν γόνυ 11 OT is similar; it is to be compared with προσκυνεῖν τινι (§151(2)). Ἑαυτοῖς (-τῷ) ‘for themselves’ R 2:14, 13:2, 1 C 14:28, Jn 19:17, R 11:25 ἑαυτοῖς (p⁴⁶FG, ἐν ἑ. AB, παρʼ ἑ. SCD, both prepositions following references in the LXX) φρόνιμοι; hence ‘of his own accord’ MPol 3.1, 13.2. Lietzmann, SAB 1934, 779. Black, Aramaic Approach 76f., sees Aram. influence e.g. Mt 23:9 D, Mk 7:4 D, for which πρὸς ἑαυτόν also appears in Lk 24:12, εἰς ἑαυτούς in 7:30; these would correspond to a dat. ethicus in Aram.—In the following examples the dat. expresses more the possessor (cf. §189): R 6:10 τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ ἀπέθανεν … ζῇ τῷ θεῷ, 11, 14:7 f. (ending with τοῦ κυρίου ἐσμέν, cf. 6:2); 7:4, 2 C 5:15, G 2:19, also 1 P 2:24. Ἀπώλοντο (A; ἀπέθανον PMich) τῷ θεῷ Herm Sim 8.6.4.

[[a]] 1. Der echte Dativ kann weiter die Größe kennzeichnen, die ein Interesseam Verbinhalt hat, mag dieser ihr zum Vor- oder Nachteil gereichen. Im Unterschied zum Objektsdativ (§174) ist der dativus commodi et incommodi in der Regel keine notwendige (konstitutive) Ergänzung, sondern eine freie (wegstreichbare) Umstandsangabe (Adverbiale, vgl. §259a–m; 258c), eine IntA (§259m); hiervon ausgenommen ist etwa seine Verwendung als »dativus possessoris« (§176b).

Zur möglichen attributiven Verwendung s. §260f/o.

Beispiele:

καὶ εὑρήσετε ἀνάπαυσιν ταῖς ψυχαῖς ὑμῶν (IntA; dat. commodi).

So werdet ihr Ruhe finden für eure Seelen. (Mt 11,29)

πορεύομαι ἑτοιμάσαι τόπον ὑμῖν (IntA; dat. commodi).

Ich gehe dorthin, um einen Platz für euch vorzubereiten. (Jh 14,2)

τούτῳ (IntA; dat. commodi) πάντες οἱ προφῆται μαρτυροῦσιν …

Für diesen legen alle Propheten das Zeugnis ab … (Apg 10,43)

ὥστε μαρτυρεῖτε ἑαυτοῖς (IntA; dat. incommodi) ὅτι υἱοί ἐστε τῶν φονευσάντων τοὺς προφήτας.

Damit stellt ihr euch selbst das Zeugnis aus, dass ihr Söhne derer seid, die die Propheten getötet haben. (Mt 23,31)

Paulus gebraucht diesen Dativ recht häufig dort, wo er das Ziel des Christenlebens nennt, z.B.:

οὐδείς … ἡμῶν ἑαυτῷ (IntA) ζῇ … ἐάν τε γὰρ ζῶμεν, τῷ κυρίῳ (IntA) ζῶμεν …

Keiner von uns lebt für sich selbst … Denn wenn wir leben, so leben wir für den Herrn … (Röm 14,7f)

[[b]] 2. Durch εἰμί sein, γίνομαι werden, ὑπάρχω (da) sein (fehlt manchmal; §256d) kann in Verbindung mit diesem Dativ das Besitzverhältnis ausgedrückt werden – auch »dativus possessoris« genannt. Der Dativ-Ausdruck wird dann meist prädikativ (als Subjektsartergänzung [SArtE], Prädikatsnomen [§258b]) verwendet, gelegentlich als Attribut (vgl. §260f/o), z.B.:

ἃ δὲ ἡτοίμασας, τίνι (SE) ἔσται;

Die beiden bedeutungsähnlichen Alternativen genitivus possessoris (§159b) und dativus possessoris unterscheiden sich typischerweise wie folgt (BDR §189,1):

Bei der Konstruktion mit Genitiv steht meist der Besitzer im Fokus, mit Dativ der Besitz (wie bei der häufigeren Konstruktion mit ἔχω), z.B.:

ἡμῶν ἔσται ἡ κληρονομία.

Dann wird das Erbeuns gehören. (Mk 12,7)

οὐκ εἰσὶν ἡμῖν πλεῖον ἢ ἄρτοι πέντε καὶ ἰχθύες δύο.

Wir haben nicht mehr als fünf Brote und zwei Fische. (Lk 9,13)

Vgl.: οὐκ ἔχομεν ὧδε εἰ μὴ πέντε ἄρτους καὶ δύο ἰχθύας.

Wir haben hier nichts außer fünf Broten und zwei Fischen. (Mt 14,17)

[[c]] 3. Besonders für das Klass. wichtig sind noch folgende an den Dativ des Interesses anschließende Gebrauchsweisen (s. BR §189):

a) Der sog. dativus sympatheticus (sachlich dem gen. possessoris entsprechend; IntA [§259m], vgl. BDR §473²), z.B.:

ἥ τε καρδία πηδᾷ μοι.

Und das Herz klopft mir (≈ Und mein Herz klopft). (nach Platon, Symposion 215e)

b) Der sog. dativus ethicus (beschränkt auf 1. und 2. Person eines Personalpronomens; wohl IntA [§259m]), z.B.:

καί μοι … μὴ θορυβήσητε.

Und schlagt mir … keinen Lärm! (Platon, Apologie 20e)

c) Der dativus auctoris: kennzeichnet den Urheber einer »Handlung« (KausA [§259g]):

aa) Klass.:

standardmäßig beim Verbaladjektiv (§64e), z.B.:

ἡμῖν γʼ ὑπὲρ τῆς ἐλευθερίας ἀγωνιστέον.

Wir wenigstens müssen unsere Freiheit verteidigen. (Demosthenes 9.70)

bb) Klass. oft anzutreffen, im NT jedoch nur einmal nachweisbar (s. BDR §191; Zerwick §59):

statt ὑπό m. Gen. beim Passiv, vor allem beim Perfekt:

οὐδὲν ἄξιον θανάτου ἐστὶν πεπραγμένον αὐτῷ.

Nichts, was die Todesstrafe verdient, ist von ihm begangen worden. (Lk 23,15)

d) Der sog. Dativ des Standpunktes (»für jmdn.« bzw. »vor jmdm.« / »in jmds. Augen« – manche ziehen diesen Dat. zum dat. ethicus; adverbial [§259m] oder attributiv [§260f/o] gebraucht), z.B.:

… ἄσπιλοι καὶ ἀμώμητοι αὐτῷ εὑρεθῆναι ἐν εἰρήνῃ.

… fleckenlos und untadelig vor ihm im Frieden befunden zu werden. (2Pt 3,14)

For grins did a Bible Search for "Dative of Respect" OR "Dative of Reference" in Romans (with different search result colors):

Romans 6:6 search result provided reason to right click on ἁμαρτίᾳ that found four dative interpretation tags: one is "Dative of Reference"

In contrast, ἁμαρτίᾳ has "Dative of Respect" (single tag) in Romans 6:10 & Romans 6:11
