Pericope search in NRSV for printing and for document

Good morning,

I am trying to search in the NRSV Bible for pericopes for my Bible Study.

I select Bible, knowing from MJ to first check that it has Heading Text for search fields, tried both chapter and verse in the dropdown, and selected only 1 John for my search passage.

In the search bar, I type HeadingText:*, and after a few minutes, I get No Results.

In trying to think ahead, I went under All Bible Text and selected Search Fields and Surface Text and got No Results.

What am I missing here? Any help would be appreciated.

Checked Google site:community.logos.com with several search parameters and found nothing to direct me.

Thank you,

Lane

I'm not a search person, but I think your search needs to be in Books?  (search type).

Are you trying to get a list of all the pericopes or are you looking for a specific one or those containing a specific word?

Books search is what you want as DMB said. When I searched headingtext:love in Books search I got results. searching for headingtext:* was taking forever so I stopped that search.

You can also type words for pericopes directly into the reference box of the NRSV.

I am trying to search in the NRSV Bible for pericopes for my Bible Study.

To view them: Open the Compare pericope tool inside the Passage Analysis tool. Be sure the NRSV is marked to display in Pericope Sets ...

A book search on heading text with a search argument of * NOT chapter, comes close with a little more than 100 false positives - mainly book names.

One can use the automatic generation of a Bible reading plan by pericope to get a list. Note a maximum of 1500 sessions in a reading plan makes this require multiple iterations.

Create a Reading Plan based on Pericopes and daily readings. Then select a range and estimate pericopes based on the number of chapters e.g. 2x no. of chapters, and make that the number of Sessions for the Plan. I started with 260 sessions for Gen-Lev and noticed there were days with no readings, so I reduced that to 220 and there were still days with no readings. When you get no gaps you may have your number of pericopes, but a quick check may reveal multiple readings e.g. ones that span chapters or books, so work from your gaps. 210 sessions had 6 gaps, so I would say 204 pericopes (in ESV).

It didn't take long to get 352 for Gen-Dt (ESV)  - 472 (NABRE)

    or use the Bible browser

Here is an easy trick to get a Passage List containing Pericopes as listed in the Bible Browser. Neighboring Passages will be merged into one reference.

    1. Open Bible Browser
    2. Filter the Browser
    3. Set the view to Pericope
    4. Send to Search
    5. Click on the Passage Filter in the Search
    6. Click on Save, but don't actually save
    7. Copy the Reference range name
    8. Create a Passage List
    9. Add from Clipboard
    10. Now you have a Passage List with Pericopes

Control counts to verify your results:

Personally I would create a quick script to extract the data directly from the dataset.

Thank you Kiyah for your response. It helped me to finally get the results I was looking for.

Definitely, I want to have a listing of all pericopes in John and the solution is good. I have to clean up the results in Word but still, it is OK.

    MJ,

I worked through all the examples you gave me and finally was able to get the results I wanted.

If you do the search on Books, with Heading Text selected and reference (John), go into search field and type an * and let it search, it will come back with all the pericopes and additional info that can be eliminated in Word. Also, you have to select Reading Order for it to be sorted correctly in order.

The processing of this search takes a while on my old PC running Windows 10. So, don't think that it isn't working.

I have included a screenshot of my results.

Of note: you have to copy and paste to Word. The export/print is NOT available even though it shows in the three dot menu.

Again thank you for your help.

Yes, any time one uses a wildcard like * the search takes lots of patience. I'm glad you got what you needed.

    Hi Lane:

This might be a bit of an overkill for your needs, but if it will be helpful in the future, I have linked an Excel file with the whole Megillah (actually, much more) that I did a few years ago. (I used sort of the same procedure.) The right-most tab has the simplest presentation and might be the most useful. (Other tabs add progressively to make the left-most tab.)

Additionally, the end-product of all of the busy-ness can be found (revised) at this reply (with more explanation in the original post):
